Congratulations to our Subunit AFS members, Uche and Kirsten! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ

Earlier this month, they presented their research to the AFS Board and the Gulf Coast Fly Fishers (GCFF). Uche received the GCFF Laif Maynard Scholarship Award for his work on southern flounder aquaculture, and Kirsten received the USM AFS Research Award for her research on cownose ray movement ecology.

These awards will help support their ongoing research here at USMโ€™s Gulf Coast Research Laboratory.

Way to go, Uche and Kirsten! ๐ŸŸ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ

Last month, our student subunit had the amazing opportunity to assist at the weigh station for the Emerald Coast Open lionfish tournament! ๐Ÿฆ๐Ÿ

Over the course of two days, our members engaged with countless community members, sharing information about invasive lionfish and ongoing management efforts. They also played a key role in data collection by enumerating, measuring, and recording the aggregate weights of more than 13,000 lionfishโ€”a vital effort in invasive species control in the Gulf of Mexico.

Not only was it an incredible hands-on experience in fisheries science, but it also gave our group the chance to contribute meaningfully to marine conservation.

Huge thanks to for having us backโ€”weโ€™re already counting down the days until next yearโ€™s tournament!
