🌊🔬 Upcoming Science Café!
What happens when we reduce pollution in the Mississippi River—could it also impact the seafood we rely on?
Join us for a fascinating Science Café with Dr. Kim de Mutsert, who will explore the surprising balance between nutrients, marine life, and fisheries in the Gulf.
Nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus—commonly found in fertilizers—flow down the Mississippi River and fuel plankton blooms in the Gulf. While this can boost the marine food web, it also contributes to the seasonal “dead zone” off Louisiana, where low oxygen levels threaten fish and shellfish.
So what happens if we reduce these nutrients?
Using food web models and insights from historic droughts, Dr. de Mutsert untangles what effect fish populations, seafood production, and the future of our coastal ecosystems.

Ocean Springs Environmental Alliance to Present Free Lecture
The Ocean Springs Environmental Alliance (OSEA) invites you to become better informed by attending a lecture featuring John Lipscomb, a Master Naturalist and an active “birder” from an early age. The lecture entitled, “What the Bluebirds Told Me,” will be held at the Mary C Cultural Center in Ocean Springs on Tuesday, February 10 at 6 p.m. for wine & cheese, 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. for the lecture and discussion.
John has been involved with outdoor activities and birding most of his life. His mother was a birder, so John learned by watching and listening to her. He has collected data on bluebirds for 18 years and shares info with the NestWatch program at Cornell University. He has been watching and feeding hummingbirds since he was a child. He wants you to know that he has no special credentials in this field nor no academic letters associated with his name. He is just like most of his fellow birders. He has a committed interest in the preservation of natural areas, providing information and helping others enjoy nature
