In the latest Mississippi MarketMaker newsletter, our Ben Posadas (Horticulture & Marine Economics) of Mississippi State University Extension Service examines the industry’s 2023 economic contributions by major species and sector. The industry contributed $228.9 million in sales, supported 3,513 jobs and generated $89.1 million in personal income.

The 2026 Gulf Resilience Community of Practice Annual Meeting is now accepting poster abstract submissions. Please share to help spread the word!

We're looking for posters showcasing education, outreach, and scientific research related to community resilience. Topics may include coastal hazard tools, public risk perception, green infrastructure, resilience planning, and more. Professionals, graduate students, and undergraduate students are all encouraged to submit.

The annual meeting will be held November 16-18 at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas.

Poster abstracts are due September 25, 2026.

🎣 The Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant-supported Fishermen Invested in Science, Healthy Ecosystems, and Sustainability (FISHES) course at Mississippi State University Extension Service is transitioning to a flexible hybrid format, making it even easier to learn about fisheries science whether or not you're on the Gulf Coast.

🐟 💻 Participants can complete online coursework on their own schedule while still having the option to join the popular field excursion aboard the R/V Alabama Discovery for hands-on experience with fisheries sampling. 🚢
