I get to work with a lot of young athletes, and I can tell you this firsthand—these 10-year-old girls love this game.

Travel softball gives them confidence, discipline, and lessons that go far beyond the field—but it also comes with real costs.

Why Most Pitchers Plateau

Almost every pitcher follows the same pattern.

• Week 1–4:
She comes once a week for a 1-hour lesson. Mechanics clean up. Velocity ticks up. Strike percentage improves.
Confidence soars!
Parents say, “This is working!”
And they’re right.
Then… it slows down.
Not because the coach ran out of answers. Not because the drills stopped working. Not because she “needs something different.”
She plateaus because nothing is happening between lessons!!

One hour a week can introduce improvement. It cannot build mastery.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth: The early gains are a quick fix — low-hanging fruit.

The next level requires reps, discipline, and consistency.

This is the fork in the road:
➡️ The ones who want it start throwing on their own.
They record video.
They repeat drills when no one is watching.
They embrace boredom.
➡️ The ones who don’t start searching for answers: “Maybe she needs another coach.” “Maybe she needs a new drill.” “Maybe it’s her age.” “Maybe it’s her confidence.”

But the answer is almost always the same.
It’s not more information.
It’s not a secret drill.
It’s not a different coach.
It’s work.
Coaching opens the door.
Effort decides who walks through it.

And that’s the difference between pitchers who improve for a month…

and pitchers who improve for years.

What an amazing moment... Paisley comes to see me every week and is small but SOOO mighty. She has more heart than any kid I've ever coached...just raw, pure love for her craft. She puts that same energy into her school work... and it shows... HONOR ROLL 😃. She's killing it on and off the field. So proud...so, so, so proud 🥹🥹🥹❤️❤️

My girl Emerson. She definitely has an unbelievable number of strikeouts, but as a pitching coach the stat that stands out to me is her walks per inning.

She's right around 0.6 walks per inning.

Let's keep some accurate stats this year ladies and get them to me as often as you can!! Let's provide proof of all our improvements in 2026!

Velocity Pitching Academy – Walk-to-Strikeout Challenge

Pitchers — let’s talk about a stat most players ignore but great pitchers obsess over:
Walk-to-Strikeout Ratio (BB:K).

It’s simple math, but it tells a coach almost everything they need to know about how dominant and consistent you really are.

👉 The Formula:
Walk-to-Strikeout Ratio = Walks ÷ Strikeouts

So if you walked 4 batters and struck out 8?
4 ÷ 8 = 0.50
That’s strong.

If you walked 2 but struck out 12?
2 ÷ 12 = 0.17
That’s elite.

Here’s how to measure yourself:

Elite pitchers: under 0.20

Very good: 0.20–0.40

Average: 0.40–0.70

Needs work: above 0.70

This is the stat college coaches look at when they want to know:
“Can this pitcher compete… when it matters?”

And here’s the truth — you don’t get elite by accident.
You get elite with consistency, reps, and intentional practice every single week.
