A special thank you to everyone for their support in our first HCA Ocala Women Physicians Event!!🎉 Women Physicians Day commemorates the life and career of Elizabeth Blackwell, the first American woman to earn a medical degree. Blackwell graduated from Geneva Medical College in New York in January 1849.
Women have made tremendous strides in medicine since Elizabeth Blackwell’s time.
The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) reported last month that as of 2025 women are for the first time a majority among residents. Women are now 50.2% of all U.S. medical residents. Moreover, according to the AAMC, while women are still just 38% of the nearly 1 million doctors in America, the number of women in the nation’s active physician workforce increased 97% between 2004 and 2022, compared to an increase of 13% for men.
