☀️ Let’s talk Florida homeschooling forms! ☀️

A child who is 6 years old by February 1st (or 5 years old on or before September 1st of the school year if you choose), will need a written notice of intent sent to the school district superintendent.
Districts should verify that the notice was received by email or phone call. Parents should also retain a copy of the Notice and documentation that the notice was received by the district, which I like to include in our portfolio in case of an audit. It is advised that if the Notice is mailed to the district that parents send the Notice with a Return Receipt Request showing that the district did in fact receive the Notice. If emailed, the parent should print a reply from the district that the Notice was received and keep it in the child’s file.
🚫 You do NOT have to use a form provided by the School District nor provide any information beyond what is required by law: name, date of birth, address.
Information about grade level, curricula or materials to be used, teaching methods, race or ethnicity, number of days or hours of instruction, social security number is NOT required.

⭐️ A homeschool evaluation is due to the superintendent's office by the anniversary date of the date on your Notice of Intent to homeschool. 🗓
There are 5 choices for evaluation in Florida:
1. A teacher selected by the parent shall evaluate the student’s educational progress upon review of the portfolio and discussion with the student. Such teacher shall hold a valid regular Florida certificate to teach academic subjects at the elementary or secondary level; (This is what I provide as a service.)
2. The student shall take any nationally normed student achievement test administered by a certified teacher; (SAT, CAT, ITBS, and in some counties, Brigance or Woodcock-Johnson)
3. The student shall take a state student assessment test used by the school district and administered by a certified teacher, at a location and under testing conditions approved by the school district; (Usually you will be referred to contact your zoned public school for this option.)
4. The student shall be evaluated by an individual holding a valid, active license pursuant to the provisions of s. 490.003(7) or (8); or
5. The student shall be evaluated with any other valid measurement tool as mutually agreed upon by the district school superintendent of the district in which the student resides and the student’s parent.

You must terminate your homeschool program when one of the following occurs:
• You move to another county, state or country. If you move within the state, you must terminate your program in the county you moved from and provide a new Letter of Intent in the county you move to.
• You decide to enroll your child in public or private school, implement a private tutoring program or otherwise stop home educating under the home education statutes.
You may also terminate your homeschool program when your child reaches age 16 and is no longer subject to compulsory education laws, however, there are several factors to take into consideration before you decide to do this:
One is that if you wish to take advantage of dual enrollment options, you will need to establish that your child is registered in a home education program or private or public school.
Another is that some health insurers allow children to be covered only so long as they are full-time students. Be sure to assess your personal situation before terminating your program.
Your Notice of Termination, like your other notices, should be brief, include the student identification information specified previously, and be signed by a parent or guardian.
🚫 Your Notice of Termination does NOT need to include information about why you are terminating your program nor if or where your child(ren) will be attending school next.
Remember, you are in CONTROL of your child’s homeschooling education, not the state!
