Friday 4/11/25 we got to attend the McCook Paint-In at McCook Community College.

The theme was legacy. Students are given 2.5 hours to come up with a design and paint a large 6x8' painting about the theme. Our students chose to consider legacy as a process of growth and development beyond tragedy. Both compositions started with a devastated city, harkening to 9/11, followed by a rebuilt city.

The event organizer said it best when he called this, "an art track meet." The pace is intense! Our posters didn't win any prizes this year, but we did bring home a medal in the individual exhibitions. Leeya Hull won 2nd place in the 3D category with her "Candy Shop" miniature interior sculpture.

We are looking forward to doing this again the future!

The Art Rooms are excited for the play tonight and this weekend! Just like with the musical, we have made a custom linocut art print for the occasion! For a mere $5, this art piece could be yours to collect. (The funds will support the DCHS Theater program.) Show you are a proud patron of the Red Devil Arts by collecting them all!

We hope to see you there!!

This will be an Elementary Art Highlight!

These kids are amazing artists! They are currently trying to work on their most competitively brilliant artwork, to hopefully gain a spot in the upcoming League art show in April this year. There will also be a student art show at the DCHS Open House in May so everyone can celebrate their talents!

These images are artworks that kids have worked on for multiple days (sometimes MONTHS) in the art room, leveling up their pieces. Great art takes time and tremendous effort. I only get to see the elementary kids once a week, so they know their art time is very valuable.

These kids make it so much fun to be an art teacher! Enjoy a small portion of the excellent work that they are making!

I love showing the mess of artmaking. I know some artists who are just super clean creators, but I promise you, high schoolers are NOT that type of artists.

We have been working on portraits using oil paints and/or paper mache. We used an AI generator to come up with the base concept, and then made our own art based off of it. This is a great tool for coming up with ideas, but we don't treat our AI art as our final art. That's what our hands are for!

Our portfolio students are also working independently from our other lessons, so they sometimes have random processes like fabric dyeing that need to be taught. We juggle quite a lot of things!

Our junior high students just finished their figure proportion unit and are starting their color theory unit. We will only shallow dive into this subject, otherwise it is an endless vast element of art.

In the elementary room we have been studying narrative art. We invented a series of stories while viewing Peter Bruegel the Elder's "The Battle Between Carnival and Lent" 1559. The kids are VERY good storytellers!

I have added some pictures of the 1st graders in their "old" costumes. They even moaned and creaked as they slowly sat down. I laughed endlessly!

Woof! This post will be a bunch of stuff! First off, we needed flocking (stuff to make grass, leaves, dirt and such), but that stuff is super expensive. So we made ours out of sawdust! We dyed it with acrylics and inks.

Next we have a photo dump from the a number of the high schooler's architecture and landscape projects. They nailed it!

Our next pair of photos show how in the elementary room we often times become a forge for weapon smithing and armor smithing (which are amazing art forms!). Does this mean we should get an iron forge for the classroom? (Can you even imagine?!)

And finally our early grade levels are starting their clay unit! The kinders are making shoe print turtles. This project is great for teaching scratch-n-slip techniques and pattern. Of course, clay is just fun
