Rather than wait for someone else to carve out space for their interests, Obies tend to prefer taking on that responsibility themselves. Oberlin has 175 student organizations for a student population that’s under 3000, so you get the picture.
And no worries––Conservatory students prioritize their extracurricular interests in much the same way as College students. They’re not only participants, but also leaders of campus organizations, both college-wide and specific to the Conservatory. Oftentimes, these commitments don’t require a student to play their instrument, but it would be inaccurate to say that time spent away from the practice room doesn’t inform a student’s musical education. It’s all related, isn’t it?
Check out just a few examples of Conservatory students participating in organizations across campus.

Enjoy this immersive video tour of the Conservatory complex. It was filmed in March 2020 for prospective students who were unable to visit our campus due to the COVID-19 lockdown. This video allows you to view (in HD detail!) the Conservatory's academic and rehearsal classrooms, social spaces, faculty studios, concert halls, recording studio, practice rooms, and much more!
This is also a useful resource if you've been unable to see a few of the Conservatory's facilities in-person due to recent construction.

The Allen Memorial Art Museum is one of the defining pillars of the College, Conservatory, and town of Oberlin. Students visit each semester to rent pieces to bring back to their dorms as part of our Art Rental program. The Allen is also an integral resource for classroom learning; Allen visits have been known to be listed in syllabi for courses in geology, music theory, and––literally––every department in-between!
At Oberlin, the Allen is more than a museum. It is a space in which you can bring your whole self to exist, breathe, move, learn, meditate, and find healing amid the rush of your daily commitments. As a Conservatory student, it paves unpredictable paths for inspiration, artistic engagement, and even performance opportunities.
Take a gander at these photos, including one from a 2019 performance by Alexa Still, Oberlin’s flute professor, and her studio in one of the best academic art museums in the nation!

This year, to adapt to the challenges brought on by the pandemic, Oberlin extended its academic year to include a summer semester to help de-densify our campus. One of the many exciting things about this summer term is a new course, called "Sound Collage," offered through our Technology in Music and Related Arts (TIMARA) department. Taught by New York DJ, producer, and educator Chris Annibell, "Sound Collage" will combine historical perspectives with hands-on creating. Read more on our webpage!
