Do you have a keen eye for detail? Have you ever looked at something and thought, "You know, if they did this (some major or minor change to the design of the item) this thing would work so much better". If so, you may have the beginnings of a great machinist. Almost everything you come into contact with on a daily basis has either been directly touched by a machinist, or made possible by the work

of a machinist. From the molds that were used to form the case of your cell phone or gaming station, to the parts of the engine and transmission in your truck, to the parts in the rockets that propel people and machines into space...all are touched by the skilled hands of a machinist. The Machine Tool Technology Program at Lanier Tech is partnered with local industry to ensure our graduates have the skills to succeed in today's workforce. As a student in our program you can expect to spend twelve to eighteen months learning everything from how to read precision measuring instruments, to applied trigonometry, to utilizing advanced computer aided manufacturing software to program parts, and of course extensive time operating conventional and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines. There is currently a deficit in skilled machinist that will only continue to grow in the near future as more and more of the "baby boomer" generation retires. Now is a great time to get into the trade. Come to school, get an education, and move straight into a job in industry where you will have the opportunity to continue your education under the mentorship of people who have been there and done that. If you stay focused and commit yourself to lifelong learning, you will be moving up the ranks in no time.

Machine Tool Technology students earn NIMS certificates.

Four Machine Tool Technology students have earned sought-after certificates from the National Institute for Metal Working Skills. These prized certificates are not easy to earn, according to MTT Instructor, Craig Taylor. MTT students have to perform a practical test, which requires them to make multiple metal parts, each with tolerances between +-.005 of an inch, and then have an inspection pass rate of 100% pass.

Instructor Taylor noted that, “It takes a good bit of skill to make the parts and pass inspection 100%. As if that is not enough, they also have to take a theory exam, and pass it to earn their certificates.”

The Machine Tool Technology students are Stewart Wickliffe, Kristen Boggs, Ryan Keen, Arthur Thibeau, and William Walker.

Taylor added, “I am very proud of these students for their hard work, and it is hard work. All of the Machine Tool Instructors look forward to helping them, and the other students, earn more certifications in the future.”

Lanier Technical College’s Machine Tool Technology Program is expecting an on-site visit from NIMS and expects to receive industry accreditation.

It was great to see Skip today. He presented Lanier Technical College Oakwood Campus with a check from The Gene HAAS Foundation for The Machine Tool Technolgy Program. I would like to thank Gene HAAS for everything that he does to help finance our country's future.
