"Remembering Scott by Helping Others" has become Scott's family's battle cry - one they will echo again this year at the annual Scott Harman Foundation Memorial Golf Outing & Dinner Event at the Dayton Country Club on Monday, May 8th. The past golf outings funded a scholarship at Ohio State for a Professional Golf Management student (it was Scott's major) and supported Lion's Eye Bank as Scott was a cornea donor. This year’s outing will help fund the press box at the new Lane Stadium, and is particularly bittersweet as sports were Scott's passion. Not only was he an exceptional athlete, but he also worked as a member of the outdoor maintenance crew during the summer, and it is how I came to know him while I trained at the track every morning for the dreaded pre-season "beep test".

As I write about the outing to encourage your attendance and support, I'd like to take a moment to remind people of Scott's athletic legacy, and why this particular project is such a meaningful way to remember and honor him. He was an outstanding goalie for the soccer team and catcher for the baseball team, but it was his role as the kicker on the football team his senior year that I would like to focus on. Due to a genetic heart condition, HCM, Scott was discouraged to participate in contact sports (at this point, everyone who knew him is laughing as he turned EVERYTHING into a contact sport). With the soccer season being over, in the last home football game against Franklin, Scott convinced his parents to allow him to play since there was a defibrillator on the sidelines. That one night, when the KICKER played Defensive End and had a dozen tackles for loss and a couple of sacks, was one of those goosebump eliciting, lump in the throat, inspiring sports moments. Scott played with so much passion, intensity and joy, and it is what really defined Scott as an athlete and person. He earned the DDN FOOTBALL Defensive Player of the Week, and as far as I know, he is the only soccer player in school history to do so. Yes, he was a badass.

Sometimes I hear "I would love to help, but I don't golf". No problem! Do you eat? Come to the dinner event, donate an auction item or just give plain old cash...no amount is too small! If everyone just helped a little, we could fund this press box for our deserving athletes.

“The Jazz Project” is the labor of love of Janet and Jack Strauss of Oakwood. The project was developed to provide Oakwood HS/JHS music students with a professionally delivered, concentrated day of music education. The students participate in music clinics taught by local area professional jazz musicians and educators. The students perform in concert with the professionals, and the professionals perform a concert as well.

By way of background, Jack and Janet grew up attending many jazz clinics and concerts. Being involved in music was life changing and very inspiring to them, and they both still play. Jack plays guitar and Janet plays flute. Their daughter plays alto sax and flute. They also play jazz as a family.

By taking their combined music experience, and contacting local jazz professionals and educators, they developed a day of jazz music education, which became known as "The Jazz Project." They have hosted Michael Bisig, the Jazz /Band Director from Beavercreek, and his band. They have also had jazz education legend Jamie Aebersold and his Quartet as part of “The Jazz Project” at OHS. Bill Burns and his Quartet, which includes Brad Goode, Christian Berg, Brian Cashwell, and James Leslie, have also participated. And this year, the UD band will join the ranks.

The program is run by OHS volunteers, OBPA, and OHS Band Director, Mr. Uhlenhake. In years past, the program was underwritten 100% by Jack and Janet Strauss, and this year, the hope is the OBPA and our wonderful Oakwood community will continue in this tradition by supporting the music clinic, performance and Oakwood's budding musicians. Proceeds from the evening concert go back to the OHS band for musical instrument purchases, uniforms, and repairs.

Please be a part of supporting this enriching event. See you there!
