Earth Day and the Environment Week @ OCP! 🌎 🐍 🕷️ 🐸 ♻️ 🪴
Mr. Dorsey from Fangs, Frogs and More visited us and talked to our students about the important role every creature on earth plays. Students and teachers got to pet a tarantula, a snake, a salamander, and even an African bullfrog! Not all wanted to have a turn, and that’s ok. 😉 Our students also planted seeds and learned about things they can do to help the Earth, like recylcling, turning off lights, and using water efficiently.

👩🚒🚒👨🚒🚑 THANK YOU to our very own local heroes, the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department! Fire Department educators visited us for a puppet show; our students learned about things found around their homes and schools that are safe for kids (crayons, tape) and tools that are only for adults (hammers, lighters).
The visit ended with an exciting visit from firefighters from Oakton Fire Station 434. One firefighter demonstrated how they put on all their gear in under 1 minute - which is as long as they have in order to be ready, including in the fire truck and with their seatbelt on, in case of an emergency. Then we all went outside and our students got to climb in to the fire truck and ambulance, all while learning even more cool facts and asking excellent questions. ❤️

Last week was Dinosaur Week at OCP! 🦕 🦖
Our students worked on measuring skills, built dinosaurs with magnetic tiles, and even became paleontologists, using different tools to dig up their own (toy 😉) dinosaurs.
We also had a special visit on Thursday from Dr. Huber, a paleontologist from the Smithsonian Institution. Dr. Huber engaged the kids with fossils, including a T. rex tooth (~70 million years old), giant sloth p**p (10,000 years old), woolly mammoth hair and tooth, and more! We all learned so much and our students had great questions and comments. 🦥 🤯

A big thank you to our friends, Ms. Kim & Mr. Alex!

Lunar New Year! 🧧🐇🍊Our students celebrated with fun crafts for Year of the Rabbit, paper lanterns, and red envelopes (as a symbol of good wishes for the new year). They worked on their fine motor skills during snack time using modified chopsticks and peeling their own tangerines (which represent happiness and abundance). Ms. Ali also taught them about Pongal, a Hindu harvest festival. Another fun and educational week at OCP! 🧧 🐇 🍊

We enjoyed the visit from our Friends of Hidden Oaks Nature Center in November! Our students learned how squirrels get ready for winter. 🐿 ❄️ We also learned the many uses of their bushy tails and how they use them to balance from branch to branch, as a parachute, for warmth, and also to communicate with each other in case of danger. Our students got to act like squirrels with their own bushy tails made out of newspaper! 🐿
