As the Laney Eagles kick off the 2026 football season today, we’re also celebrating the legacy of the coach who helped shape generations of student-athletes.

🚲 Affordable e-bike rentals are available for Oakland residents!

The City of Oakland is offering four-week e-bike rentals for just $20 for eligible residents, making it easier to get around town without the cost of owning an e-bike.

Rental details:
• Four-week rental
• $20 for eligible residents or $120 standard rate
• Open to Oakland residents ages 18+
• Rider gear included
• Government ID and credit or debit card required for a $250 refundable deposit

Coach John Beam’s legacy continues through the coaches and student-athletes whose lives he touched.

The inaugural Coach Beam Service Award, created by the John Beam Legacy Foundation, is recognizing high school coaches who go beyond the game to mentor, support and create opportunities for young people.

One of this year’s recipients, Hayward High School head football coach Virgil Hart, has a special connection to Laney. Hart played football at Laney, where Coach Beam was his offensive coordinator, and credits Beam as both a coach and mentor as he built his own career in coaching and counseling.

Today, Hart is bringing those lessons back to his own community in Hayward.

Roger Viet Chung is featured in the first episode of My Family, a new three-part audio series from the Asian Prisoner Support Committee and APEX Express.

In Episode 1, “How Did We Get Here?”, Chung shares his experience with the ROOTS program at San Quentin and his work as founder and faculty lead of Laney’s Restoring Our Communities (ROC) program, which supports formerly incarcerated students and justice-involved youth.

The episode explores Southeast Asian refugee experiences, incarceration, deportation, family separation, healing and the role of ethnic studies in building understanding and community.

🎨 Laney artists are leaving their mark on Oakland.

KQED recently spent time with students in Laney College’s ART 129 summer mural course as they completed a massive new mural along 5th Avenue in Oakland. Nearly 20 students and several volunteers worked together on the project, led by instructor Fredericko Alvarado.

The finished mural celebrates culture, community and public education, with imagery representing communities from across the Bay Area and the mascots of all four Peralta colleges.

For many of the students, the experience became much more than an art class. Students told KQED about finding community, making connections with other artists and even discovering new directions for their lives and careers.

One student summed up the Laney experience beautifully: “In terms of community, I think Laney brings people together a lot more.”
