It’s National Oyster Day! 🦪 Before you head out for happy hour, let’s take a moment to recognize the oyster's incredible historical contributions and happenings in the Bay Area. From 3-story high Ohlone shellmounds to Jack London's infamy as an oyster pirate ⛵, there's lots to know and discover.

Food preservation has been a longstanding element of the cultures, ecosystem, and history of the Bay Area. We can follow its trail through the ages, from the Lisjan Ohlone people to the prolific fruit canneries that sprang up during the industrial era to the endless preserves and ferments from all around the world we have access to today.

🌼 Please join us to celebrate the long and abundant days of August and summer gardens with a SLOW FOOD GARDEN PARTY at Bancroft Community Garden ! 🪴🐌

For your potluck contribution, let’s go super seasonal and fresh 🍑 in honor of the edible garden that we’ll be dining in. Source from your own garden if you’re able, or stop by one of the hugely abundant farmers' markets happening nearly every day of the week around the region. 🥬

Or pop by Bancroft Community Garden during open hours (generally 11am to 7pm-ish) to pick some herbs to include!

Bring your own dish, utensils, and plate—plus a friend! We'll provide drinks, cups, seating, plus garden tours of the beautiful Bancroft Garden with manager Steve.

⚠️This is a small event (20 people!) with limited seats, so RSVP quick!

In our July newlsetter, we dive into the economics of eating, and how Fair food, in reality, is a conundrum. 🤔 Food costs more, which is nothing new, and still everyone is feeling the squeeze. It starts from the ground it's grown on, and adds up when accounting for geopolitical disruptions, climate change, and inflationary costs across the board.
