Head-Royce School (Head-Royce or HRS) is a co-educational college-preparatory K-12 school in Oakland Head-Royce is composed of three divisions.

Head-Royce School (Head-Royce or HRS) is a co-educational college-preparatory K-12 school in Oakland, California. The forerunner of Head-Royce was the Anna Head School for Girls in Berkeley, founded in 1887. Relocated to its current site in 1964, Anna Head School for Girls merged with the neighboring Royce School in 1979 to form the present-day Head-Royce School. The Lower School consists of kindergarten through 5th grade. Middle School is composed of 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. Finally, Upper School encompasses 9th through 12th grades. Most new students enter Head-Royce in kindergarten, 6th grade, or 9th grade.

Led by teachers KJ Jackson, Hilary Bond, and Eric Taylor, Head-Royce’s history became a dynamic hands-on learning experience for 7th graders in US History class.

The South Campus Collaboratory space was turned into an interactive archive where students used guided questions to explore the earliest days of the Anna Head School for Girls to the modern era.

Artifacts included yearbooks, clothing, curriculum, grade books, scrap books, banners, and more. As students delved into the school’s archives, they contemplated how their experiences today compared to those of Anna Head and Head-Royce alumni from previous generations.

“It was really cool to look around and touch all of the artifacts to learn and think about what their school life was like back then,” said Lauren H. ’32. “I feel like it was really important to think about the history of our school and how we got to the place we are today.”

The physical education continues! 🏓 What began as a chance encounter on the Piedmont pickleball courts has turned into an ongoing friendly competition for Coach Nicole Bowler and her former student-athletes.

Coach Bowler and junior Ben G. have been playing competitive pickleball together for several years, and since this summer, alumni Andy Johnston ’07, Brandon Steele ’07, and Daniel Kaplan ’07 have joined the action. The group now plays regularly throughout the year—and the games keep getting bigger and better as more Jayhawks take the court.

Investigative journalist Julia Harte ’05 will publish her first book, Americans Without Borders: The Radical Activists Who Fought for US Ideals Abroad While Facing Political Persecution at Home, on October 6, 2026.

Through extensive research and on-the-ground reporting, Julia’s book unearths the 200-year history of Americans who traveled abroad to join revolutionary liberation movements—and in return were labeled radicals by the U.S. government.

Americans Without Borders is available now for pre-order online at Bookshop.org, Barnes & Noble, Target, Amazon, and many other sites and local bookstores. Copies are on their way to the Head-Royce library. Congratulations, Julia!

This school year we’re thrilled to see two alumni return home as members of the professional community: Sam Yee ‘20 and Claire Van Ness ‘19.

Sam joins the History Department teaching Ethnic Studies and US History.

Claire joins the administration as Admissions Outreach Coordinator.

Sam and Claire have something else in common: a Head-Royce family legacy.

Sam’s mother, Margaret Yee, was a longstanding member of the English department and Claire’s mother, Lea Van Ness, was a longtime lower school teacher and Lower School Head.

Welcome back home, Sam and Claire! Jayhawks for life.

Head-Royce classics! With schoolbook copy in hand, longtime teachers and best friends Jeff Key and Barry Barankin met up with former students Max Key ‘00 and Mark Schneider ‘00 to watch the IMAX film adaptation of The Odyssey together.

Mr. Key taught photography and film for 36 years at HRS; Mr. Barankin taught English and drama for 40.

Max and Mark studied The Odyssey together in Mr. Barankin’s class. They remain great friends, and Homer’s epic text remains an English 11 staple for students today, as it has been since the 1970s.
