Founded in 1951, Bishop O'Dowd High School offers a Catholic, college preparatory education to prepa

O'Dowd provides its students with academic, extracurricular and faith opportunities that help them achieve at the highest levels and prepare them for admittance to the top universities in the country. O'Dowd ranks in the top ten of more than 200 public and Catholic high schools in the greater Bay Area with regards to the percent of the entire senior class admitted into the UC system.

Creating Space for Connection 📵 This year, O'Dowd is beginning a bell-to-bell cell phone-free school day, but the change started long before phones went into backpacks. Over the past year, students partnered with faculty and school leaders to research adolescent well-being, visit phone-free schools, listen to our community, and help shape the new policy. Rooted in O'Dowd’s Catholic mission, the initiative is designed to create more space for focused learning, meaningful relationships, and the everyday moments of connection that help our students flourish.

Bringing Broadway Back to O'Dowd 🎭 This summer, Dramatic Arts Program Manager Meredith Barnidge and Technical Director Jonathan Angeles attended the Broadway Teachers Workshop in New York City. Led by leading Broadway performers, designers, and producers, the workshops explored evolving industry practices in directing, technical theatre, choreography, and accessibility. “For students interested in pursuing theatre, it’s important that we’re preparing them for the industry they’ll enter,” Meredith shared. They returned with fresh practices and resources to strengthen O'Dowd’s theatre program.

New Dragons & Family BBQ 🐉 During BOWOW, Bishop O'Dowd Week of Welcome, we hosted a special BBQ for our new Dragons and their families. The Quad was filled with welcoming remarks, delicious food, community building, and line dancing!

Dragon Spotlight 📣 Kian Raja ’27 transformed his Anawim service project into an opportunity for connection across cultures. Through his coaching business, Kian raised funds to build a basketball court and purchase athletic equipment for underserved youth in New Delhi. During spring break, he partnered with local nonprofit Each One Teach One to teach basketball and physical education. The experience deepened Kian’s connection to his Indian heritage while demonstrating how shared joy can transcend language and bring communities together. Summer Service Learning ☀️ Many of our Dragons got ahead on their service hours over the summer, serving a whopping 23,530 hours, with more than half of those hours served in Oakland! Nice job, Dragons!

Launching the O'Dowd Journey 🐉 The Class of 2030 began their O'Dowd journey through the Bishop O'Dowd Week of Welcome (BOWOW), an intentional introduction to the people, programs, and values that shape the O'Dowd experience. Designed to build belonging and prepare students for a strong start, BOWOW combined campus orientation and technology preparation with opportunities for reflection, relationship-building, and service. Through a class retreat and service learning immersion, our newest Dragons began exploring what it means to learn, grow, serve, and contribute at O'Dowd.
