This morning, our kindergarteners got a special visit from Interim Head of School Ricky Lapidus!

Ricky brought along one of his favorite books, "The Rabbit Listened" by Cori Doerrfeld, and settled in with our youngest Jayhawks for storytime. Through this thoughtful story, students explored themes of empathy, connection, and belonging—all important parts of how we connect with and understand one another.

Visits like these are a wonderful way for our youngest Jayhawks to get to know the people who make up our Professional Community and school leadership, building meaningful connections from the very beginning of their Head-Royce journey.

We kick off the year in the Upper School with Fall Out, an overnight trip where students spend time learning, exploring, and getting to know their classmates in a whole new setting. From ropes courses and archery to river rafting and performances, each grade tackled new challenges to help create moments they’ll never forget.

Here’s to a year of adventure, growth, and learning together.

Last weekend, Head-Royce students, families, faculty, and staff marched in the Oakland Pride Parade in celebration of our LGBTQ+ community. Organized by the Office of Equity and Community, it was a meaningful way to begin the school year and celebrate alongside our neighbors across Oakland. Thank you to everyone who marched with us and helped kick off the year with joy and belonging.

IHoS Ricky Lapidus witnesses some pure joy as our youngest students enjoy the new Little Toy. (And a few third graders who wish they could have had this back in the day...)

And just like that, the 2026–27 school year is underway.

New and returning Jayhawks filled campus today, greeted by Upper School students, Professional Community members, and, of course, Tuffy.

A special shoutout to our Lower School teachers, who kicked off the year with percussion, singing, and a special message for our students: “We’re so glad you’re here this very day.”

Welcome back, Jayhawks. Let’s make it a great year.

On Friday, students entering 6th and 9th grades, along with new-to-Head-Royce 7th and 8th graders, came to campus for orientation. They reconnected with friends, met new classmates and teachers, explored their new divisions, received schedules, and got a first glimpse of what the year ahead will bring. There were a few nerves, plenty of excitement, and lots of anticipation as they took their first steps into a new school year.

Tomorrow, we welcome everyone back, and we can’t wait to have our campus buzzing with Jayhawk energy again!

Here’s the scoop: the new school year is off to a great start!

Yesterday, Head-Royce families gathered on South Campus for our first Family Network Ice Cream Social. New and returning families came together to reconnect, meet new people, and learn more about the Family Networks that help foster connection and community throughout the year. Thanks to everyone who joined us—we loved seeing so many Jayhawks back on campus. What a sweet start to the school year!

Congratulations to Blake Schaaf ’23 on beginning his professional baseball career by signing an undrafted minor league contract with the New York Yankees!

A middle infielder at Georgetown and Wake Forest, Blake burst on the scene with a standout season in the 2026 Cape Cod League, batting .360 with a .451 on-base percentage in 114 at-bats.

Blake signed with the Yankees on July 29, 2026, joined by parents James Schaaf and Kelly Brown, a beloved middle school English teacher at Head-Royce for more than 20 years.

From Jayhawk Green and Gold to Yankees pinstripes––way to go, Blake!

The Heads Up Summer Showcase was a celebration of four weeks of learning, creativity, and community. Families explored student work displayed throughout campus, experienced original films and music, enjoyed student-made desserts, and cheered on performances highlighting the many ways students challenged themselves this summer. The event concluded with the graduation of our 9th grade Heads Up students, marking the completion of their journey through the program. Thank you to our students, families, and faculty for making another memorable summer possible.

This summer's Hoops Camp was about more than basketball. It was about building confidence, embracing challenges, and learning the true meaning of "Tuff Work." Coach Brit and her incredible team helped campers strengthen their skills while creating a supportive, high-energy environment where every athlete could grow and shine.

Thank you to everyone who made these two weeks so memorable. We can't wait to welcome even more future Jayhawks to the court next summer!
