Last night, two OHDS 8th graders, Yishai D. and Ayala B., represented OHDS beautifully when they read Hebrew poetry excerpts at the community October 7th commemoration at Temple Sinai, organized by@jcceastbay and 14 other East Bay Jewish institutions.

3rd graders work on a multi-part art project involving shape, collage, and narrative. First, they created three "monster" characters, each made of cutout shapes, including a name. The goal was to avoid using pencils or pens for details, instead planning and executing each monster's form using pieces of paper. Then, they were tasked with drawing a 3-panel comic strip featuring their monster characters. The addition of pencils and pens meant more detail work, and also a chance to explore the creative potential of each monster's character.

Middle school students take a variety of mixed-grade Jewish studies classes, giving them hands-on experiences with a variety of Jewish texts and practices. The fall trimester gave students the opportunity to study some elements of Masechet Sukkah, a tractate of Talmud covering the laws and customs of the Sukkot holiday. In this case, students examined a variety of lulav and etrog sets using their newly-gained knowledge from class. Looking for blemishes that might render an item un-kosher/unfit for ritual brought the rules of the text to life.

Bridge-K students participate in our gardening program weekly with HaMorah Adina. Teaching students about how we grow our food, as well as flowers, gets interwoven with Hebrew language skills and Jewish values. It also gives them a wonderful opportunity to work on long-term planning as well as the life cycle of plants. Plus, it's a really fun way to spend time outside during the day!
