On day three, we celebrate the travelers. The pioneers that set the standards for traveling outside of our comfort zones.

Thoroughout the history books, black travel began with the Middle Passage and ceased to exist. But a resurgence of travel would spark thanks to the courage of flight.
Bessie Coleman soared across the sky as the first African American, and the first Native American woman pilot. Known for performing flying tricks, Coleman’s nicknames were; “Brave Bessie,” “Queen Bess,” and “The Only Race Aviatrix in the World.” Her goal was to encourage women and African Americans to reach their dreams. Unfortunately, her career ended with a tragic plane crash, but her life continues to inspire people around the world.

Into the right now, we salute Baba Arnold Perkins, with the and for orchestrating black families and especially our children to travel outside of their own comfort zones and step foot onto ancestral soil.

Also for the right now and to our future, the students and alums from OUSD who were vulnerable and allowed themselves to be push to the nth degree. For they will share their stories of travel and challenge to make others aware of the advantages of travel. Also to the parents who put their faith in the adults guiding their children on such a journey.

To day 3... as we are in awe of your love, light and accomplishments. In solidarity, give thanks!

Continued homage as we celebrate Black History Month. On day two, we celebrate the architects. The pioneers that mold and shape systems of black evolution.

Journey to the past, we salute the architect, the "Father of Black History," distinguished Black author, editor, publisher, and historian (December 1875 – April 1950). Carter Goodwin Woodson. Woodson believed that Blacks should know their past in order to participate intelligently in the affairs in our country. He strongly believed that Black history – which others have tried so diligently to erase – is a firm foundation for young Black Americans to build on in order to become productive citizens of our society.

Into the right now, we salute the CEO of Kingmakers of Oakland and Emeritus Director of the Office of African American Male Achievement (AAMA) Christopher Chatmon. Chatmon's passion to uplift the African American community and has dedicated his career and life work to creating pathways of success within Oakland and beyond.

Also for the right now and to our future, we salute Oakland Technical High School, Yale and Columbia University alum, and current Piedmont Elementary AAMA Manhood Development Program Facilitator, Akintunde Ahmad. His myriad of talents and life experience gives life to the many youth he inspires both in and out of the classroom.

To day 2... as we are in awe of your work and accomplishments. In solidarity, give thanks!
