πŸ“£ Your District, Your Voice πŸ“£
Community involvement is crucial to ensure that the needs of school communities and student groups are represented and that parent/guardian input is included in district decisions.

Check out these excellent opportunities to get involved with an OUSD committee via The Oaklandside.

There are open seats on oversight bodies that guide the school district on major initiatives from repurposing vacant properties to allocating tax dollars.

Teacher Appreciation Night was πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯!
Thank you for hosting us, Oakland Ballers!

08/26/2026

You may have been there Friday night for Teacher Appreciation Night at the Oakland Ballers game, and a lot of people from across OUSD were there. In fact, some had featured roles.

An OUSD 2026 Teacher of the Year (not Alameda County as the announcer said), Megan Hatschek from Think College Now got to throw out the first pitch. That was followed by five students from Hoover Elementary School yelling play ball! They were Kipp, Kye, Kane, Xe'Morah, and Beth.

And mid-game, a 5th grader named Kobe from Redwood Heights Elementary whose poetry was published by Chapter 510 & the Dept. of Make / Believe in a book called When the Stars Bloom in Oakland got to read his poem to the crowd. All of them received big rounds of applause from the crowd.

It was a fun evening for everyone on hand that ended with a Ballers win and a drone show. Many thanks to the Ballers for always supporting our students and staff!

It was a big day in San Francisco and, potentially, for OUSD. The Golden State Valkyries, the WNBA, and SF Mayor Daniel Lurie announced that the 2027 WNBA All Star Game will be played at Chase Center. Superintendent Dr. Denise Saddler was there for the announcement, as the District is looking forward to this incredible event and the positive impact it will have on Bay Area students and educators, similar to the NBA All-Star Game last year.

Dr. Saddler got to meet with political leaders including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee, State Superintendent Tony Thurmond, and Oakland Rep. Lateefah Simon discussing supporting our schools. And for good measure, she spoke with Warriors Coach Steve Kerr.

This year, was on Sunday, August 16 (a month earlier than usual), and showed up strong! With a short time to get organized, OUSD still had hundreds of students, families, and staff show up in their colorful outfits, with rainbows everywhere. They marched together down Broadway in a unified show of love and support for the community. As the sign says, OUSD takes PRIDE in our diversity.
