Most adverbs typically weaken your writing because they tell us what we already know which makes your writing less vivid. Spot the adverbs in your writing and try deleting the adverb or replacing it with a verb or stronger expression. If you choose the right words, your writing will paint vivid images in the minds of your readers!

Get to know WCC Student Alumni!
James Nguyen is a WCC Student Alumnus who is currently a 4th year undergrad studying Economics and Data Science at UC Berkeley. He wishes to pursue a career within the finance/technology industry. This summer, he interned at Wells Fargo as a financial analyst. 🏦💸
James was coached by WCC at Richmond High School in 2017. Here's what he had to say about his experience with WCC:
"My overall experience with WCC was great! I had Nancy Boas as my writer coach and she honestly gave me the voice I never thought I had. The first few WCC sessions were very unproductive because I didn't feel completely comfortable talking to her about my experiences growing up. It wasn't until the third week of working with her where I really got to know her. I eventually took a leap of faith and opened up to her completely. I never looked back ever since. While I worked with Nancy, she made me reflect on my life and made me realize that there were many experiences I simply overlooked. Nancy understood and valued my struggles. All of the traumas I have experienced being a first-generation, low-income student from Richmond, California were all experiences I considered normal and weren't worth talking about. Nancy made all of my struggles and achievements heard. Now I am finishing up two degrees at UC Berkeley on a full-ride scholarship thanks to Nancy and the WCC team."

In our everyday speech, we tend to use filler words. These fillers then make their way into our writing, but at a cost. Filler words make our writing too wordy and less powerful. Avoid using fillers such as those listed in this image to write strong and concise sentences!

Justin Rodriguez is a WCC Student Alumnus & Coach who graduated from Claremont McKenna College. Fun fact: Justin loves being impulsive. He once spent the night in Yosemite valley as a last minute decision! 🏞️
Justin was coached by WCC at El Cerrito High School in 2011. Here's what he had to say about his experience with WCC:
"I thoroughly enjoyed this program as a freshman in high school. Learning how to write clearly and in an organized fashion is fundamental to communication. I wish there was a little more explicitness or aspects about the fundamental of writing embedded into program as part of the school teacher's curriculum."
