This message came to me this morning, partly in English and partly in Spanish. But somehow, I knew it wanted to be shared in Spanish. Disfrutan!

Con mis ojos puedo ver tantas cosas hermosas y feas. Con mi corazón siento tantas cosas que se contradicen por dentro.

Nunca estuvimos destinados a aguantar tanto.

Descansar no significa abandono.

Porque el descanso es necesario para mantenerse comprometido con el mundo.

Descansa. Llora. Grita. Porque el duelo tiene muchas formas.

Entonces sonríe, ríe y alégrate, porque la vida también tiene belleza.

You aren't afraid of sharing your idea.

A part of you is afraid of what might happen if you do.

It whispers:

"Don't do it. What if they think it's a terrible idea?"

That voice isn't trying to embarrass you.

It's trying to protect you.

Maybe it learned, long ago, that speaking up led to criticism, rejection, or feeling small. So now, before anyone else has a chance to judge you, it tries to keep you safe by convincing you to stay quiet.

And every time you listen...

one part sighs with relief.

Another quietly grieves.

Because the part that longs to contribute, to create, to be seen, slowly begins to believe its voice doesn't matter.

The answer isn't to silence the protective part or force yourself to push through it.

The invitation is to become curious.

What is that part afraid would happen if you spoke?

And what might it need to know before it could trust that today isn't the same as yesterday?

Sometimes the most important conversation isn't the one you have with your boss.

It's the one you have with yourself first.

We learn so many ways to cope with what we feel.

We learn to calm ourselves. Distract ourselves. Reframe our thoughts. Push through. Regulate. Stay busy. Think positively. Sometimes those strategies are exactly what we need, and they can help us navigate difficult moments.

But sometimes we notice something else.

The same patterns keep returning.

The anxiety returns. The need to control returns. The perfectionism returns. The overthinking returns. The shutting down returns.

And perhaps the question isn't only, “What can I do to manage this?”

Perhaps there is another question worth asking:

“What inside me needs my attention so that this strategy may no longer be necessary?”

From an Internal Family Systems perspective, the behaviors and patterns we struggle with often aren't random. They may be strategies that parts of us learned somewhere along the way because, at the time, those strategies felt necessary to keep us safe, accepted, or acceptable to others.

Rather than fighting them or simply trying to make them quieter, we can begin getting curious about them.

What are you trying to do for me?
What are you afraid might happen if you stopped?
What are you carrying that I haven't yet understood?

And when those parts feel safe enough, heard enough, and ready, healing can become about more than managing the strategy.

It can become about helping those parts heal and release what they've been carrying, so they no longer need to rely on the strategies that once helped them navigate the world.

Coping has a place.

And sometimes, what we've spent so much time trying to manage may actually be something inside of us asking to be met.

You finally said no.

Instead of feeling relieved...

you felt guilty.

Almost sick to your stomach.

So you apologized.

You changed your mind.

Or you said yes anyway.

What if that guilt isn't proof you did something wrong?

What if it's a part of you that's terrified of what might happen if you disappoint someone?

You don't have to spend the rest of your life believing guilt and love are the same thing.

I believe there is something deeply beautiful about the journey of coming home to ourselves.

Not becoming someone new.
Not fixing who we are.
Not leaving the parts of ourselves we find difficult behind.

But slowly turning toward ourselves with curiosity and compassion.

Meeting the parts of us we learned to hide.
Listening to the parts that have been working so hard to keep us safe.
Remembering dreams we tucked away.
Reconnecting with the wisdom beneath all the noise, expectations, roles, and striving.

Coming home to ourselves isn’t always a straight path. Sometimes we wander. Sometimes we lose our way. Sometimes we look for home in other people, in achievement, in belonging, or in becoming who we think the world needs us to be.

And perhaps those places can offer us warmth along the way.

But there is something different about discovering that we can also become a place of belonging within ourselves.

Maybe that is part of the journey.

Not becoming someone else.

But finding our way back to the person who has been there all along.

What might coming home to yourself mean for you?

You aren't lazy.

You're exhausted from feeling pulled in two different directions.

One part wants to get up at 5:00 AM, work out, and finally finish the project.

Another part says,

"We can't keep going like this."

Most of us think one of those parts has to win.

So we push harder.

Or we give up.

But neither part is the problem.

Both are trying to help you.

They just have different ideas about what you need.

When someone helps you slow down and really listen to both...

without judging either one...

something begins to change.

The tension softens.

The fight gets quieter.

And sometimes those two parts discover they've wanted the same thing all along:

for you to be well.

Have you been noticing parts of you having conversations like this?

Awareness is often where growth begins.

It just isn’t always where transformation ends.

Many people become aware of their patterns and even understand where they came from.

Yet the patterns remain.

Why?

Because those patterns are often being maintained by protective parts that believe they’re keeping us safe.

Until those protectors are understood—and no longer need to carry those roles—the old patterns can continue to feel necessary, even when we consciously want something different.

If this reflection resonates with you, and you’re longing to explore what’s beneath the patterns that no longer seem to serve you, I’d be honored to walk alongside you.

A heartfelt thank you to Loubna Noureddin, for thinking of me and sharing this beautiful quote from Stephen Cope.

It immediately resonated with me because it speaks to something that has been deeply true in my own healing journey.

For much of my life, there were parts of me that felt unknown, unwanted, unseen, or carrying burdens they were never meant to hold. Like so many of us, I learned to push some of those parts away in hopes of becoming someone more acceptable.

It wasn’t until I began welcoming every part of myself—not fixing them, fighting them, or trying to get rid of them—that something profound began to happen.

As those parts were met with curiosity, compassion, and the presence of Self—that inner healing intelligence we all carry—they were finally witnessed.

The parts that had long felt disavowed became known.

The parts that had carried shame discovered they were worthy of love.

The parts that had been defined by pain were no longer limited to the stories they had been carrying.

Over time, they were able to release those burdens and step out of the roles they were forced to hold in my inner system.

That, to me, is what this quote captures so beautifully.

“In order to undertake it, we must first agree to exile nothing.”

Those words feel less like a philosophy and more like an invitation.

An invitation to come home to every part of ourselves.

That is the privilege I have each time I sit with a beautiful human in session—holding space as Self begins to welcome home what has long been exiled. ❤️
