Why not consolidate the remaining elementary districts and propose one bond shared by all schools?

Consolidating school districts is a separate process from Measures W and Y, which are on the ballot this November. It would require study, public involvement, and action involving the affected school districts, county and state agencies, and potentially local voters.

It could also involve important questions about transportation, governance, staffing, programs, facilities, existing debt, and how resources would be shared.

Measures W and Y do not propose district consolidation. Instead, they address facility needs within YUSD’s existing school and taxing boundaries. Because those boundaries differ, one shared bond cannot simply replace the two measures currently before voters.

This November, the YUSD community will vote on two bond measures to address a range of pressing facility needs at Coarsegold Elementary, Rivergold Elementary, and Yosemite High School.

So, why should we move forward with these projects now?

Delaying repairs can allow existing problems to grow and become more expensive as buildings age and the costs of labor and construction materials increase. Addressing needs now can help protect facilities the community has already invested in and reduce the likelihood of more extensive repairs later.

There is also a risk that programs and services could be disrupted, relocated, or discontinued if the facilities that house them deteriorate to the point that they can no longer be used.
