Today, staff gathered at ORHS for a meaningful time of professional learning with Houston Kraft from CharacterStrong!

Together, they explored what it truly means to be kind and how to be more intentional about putting kindness into action in their schools. From everyday interactions to small gestures that make a big difference, staff were reminded that kindness is more than a feeling and it's not random. It's a choice we make through our words and actions.

Thank you, Houston, for encouraging us to think about the impact we can have on our students, colleagues, and school communities through intentional acts of kindness!

October is National Pedestrian Safety Month!

As our students, families, and staff travel to and from school each day, we encourage everyone to help keep our community safe.

When walking, pay attention to what's happening around you. Watch for traffic before crossing, stay visible, and avoid distractions along the way. Drivers, remember to slow down in school zones, stay alert near crosswalks, and always watch for pedestrians.

Pedestrian safety is everyone's responsibility! Together, we can help ensure everyone arrives at their destination safely.

Fall break may mean quieter campuses, but our Maintenance and Operations team has been busy behind the scenes!

From painting projects and touch-ups to refinishing a gym floor, repairing parking lots, and completing countless smaller projects, this hardworking team is using the break to refresh our schools.

We appreciate their dedication, attention to detail, and commitment to keeping our campuses safe, welcoming, and ready for students and staff. Thank you for all you do!

Students in AP Physics 1, Physics C, Honors Physics, and Rocket Club recently took their learning beyond the classroom with a visit to the .tce Tickle College of Engineering at UT Knoxville. Students connected with the UT Space Student Association to learn more about preparing for their upcoming ARC Nationals competition and gained firsthand insight into the science, engineering, and teamwork behind competitive rocketry.

The visit also included a special opportunity to learn from an ORHS Class of 1986 alumnus. A special thank you to teacher Betsy Fairfax for coordinating real-world learning opportunities like this that connect classroom concepts with meaningful experiences and inspire students to keep exploring what’s possible!

Willow Brook intersession students explored science with a special guest from ; kindergarten dove into leaf research, discovering the science behind nature's colors and shapes; third grade got creative, crafting their very own tiny planets, while second grade worked together to create a beautiful paper quilt!

Hands-on learning always makes for an amazing day of discovery. Science is so much fun when you get to create, explore, and work together!

RMS intersession students are cooking up something special with the Roving Chef program from by making guacamole from scratch!

Measuring ingredients, following steps, and working as a team are all part of the process. This is such a great way for students to apply what they learn in the classroom and have fun learning in the kitchen, all while enjoying a snack!

Thank you, intersession staff, for making learning both fun and delicious!

Thank you to for the generous donation of magazine last month. It sparked something special in Robertsville Middle students, who used one of the featured articles as the foundation for a unit comparing it with two other texts, guided by rich discussions led by the school librarian, Mrs. Haendel, and English teacher Dr. Pemberton.

The big question students explored: "Why is it important to learn about the Scarboro 85?"

One 6th-grade student, James Hardy, took that question to heart and continued researching further at the Oak Ridge Public Library. He then visited local historical markers with his family to learn even more.

RMS teachers plan to keep the momentum going this fall with more learning, including a possible field trip for students. It was powerful for students to connect directly to this historical event through their own families. They learned that one of their classmates' great-grandfathers was the principal during integration, and Bond Park in front of the school was named after him! Two other students share a grandmother who was one of the Scarboro85 and recognized her name on the plaque honoring the group in their school lobby.

We're thankful for fantastic community partners who help bring learning to life.
