Home and recovered now from an art whirlwind at the Portrait Society of America conference in Atlanta. I’m thrilled that my drawing “Iron Man–Portrait of Anthony Adcock” was awarded 3rd Place overall in the competition–not bad, considering the calibre of work in the show this year... and every year. Tony’s own portrait of me was also in the show, and received the recognition of Second Honor.
It was great to reconnect with old friends, and make a few new ones, too. Already looking forward to next year!

I made a nice little batch of homemade pastels using many of the pigments we collected on a past trip to Rousillon, France from Boutique Cricri.

Just wrapped-up another fun class! The Portrait in Pastel might be my new favorite class to teach. It allows me to scratch the “color itch” while still working in dry media–which is my happy place. Looking forward to doing more like this!

“Iron Man – Portrait of Anthony Adcock”

This has been on my easel for a long time, but I think it may finally be finished: a portrait of my friend and former student, Anthony Adcock.

Tony comes from a family of iron workers, and has helped build the city of Chicago for over two decades. I wanted to draw him in his work clothes—they’re part of who he is, rooted in midwestern working-class life.

But Tony is also a gifted artist. Taking inspiration from the job site, his artwork explores the intersection of fine art and the blue-collar trades, with skillful representations of construction tools and materials. The plywood behind him is a callback to that body of work, an echo of his illusionistic renderings of woodgrain, concrete, steel, and rust.

Tony is a builder, through and through. This portrait honors his dedication to his work, his family, his friends, and his art.
