Meet the next generation of EdNavigator Leaders: Victoria Paulino and Nelida Garcia!

In addition to overseeing our navigation support work nationwide, Victoria built our current pediatric referrals model from the ground up and has personally assisted almost 700 families with a wide range of school-related challenges. Nelida has managed and grown our partnerships with healthcare organizations for the past three years, cultivating strong collaborative relationships with senior contacts and front-line care providers alike. Together, they’ll lead a lean but immensely talented team through the next phase of EdNavigator’s evolution starting in December.

We recognize that school districts face a multitude of challenges, from staffing to funding and scheduling, that can slow the process of getting families the support they need. At the same time, school systems must do better at meeting the needs—and legal rights—of students. Such a high rate of failure is simply unacceptable.

We propose several reasonable, common-sense changes that will make it easier for school district staff to serve families efficiently and ensure their legal rights are met. A system that works better for families will benefit both students and educators, who will in turn be better equipped to meet the needs of the children in their classrooms.

While helping more than 300 families navigate public school systems in the Boston area, our Navigators noticed an alarming pattern: Over and over, bureaucratic delays and red tape prevented them from accessing the special education evaluations and supports their children were owed. After carefully documenting these issues, we found that 1 in 4 families encountered a policy compliance failure that delayed their child's special education support for as long as 3-6 months—and sometimes, even kept their child out of school entirely. New Orleans early childhood education providers are increasing programming, staff, and facilities ahead of a major expansion in publicly subsidized seats. The expansion starts in July and is funded by $21M in new property taxes approved by voters last year.

The expansion, scheduled to begin in July, is fueled by $21 million in new property taxes that voters approved last year, a taxpayer commitment similar to what the New Orleans Public library receives.
