In all that we do, we strive to empower the individuals and families in our care. And receiving incredible feedback about someone’s time in our care is so rewarding.

Even though this family came into home birth already having brought three beautiful babes into the world, they still raved about all they learned about pregnancy, birth, and parenting through their care with Birth Roots.

Spending time with folks, answering questions, and holding space can make for a transformational experience—all the more impactful through the sacred journey of birthing.

Many thanks to all who entrust us with this intimate care for one or even more births!

We will say it again…this is the best job. (Calling, really.)

File this under “I have the best job ever” and

When you work with your client to ask for help from friends and family so they can be cared for in the postpartum time, and then their people truly show up for them, and it means your client is enjoying traditional postpartum foods after an amazing home birth…and then you as the midwife get to have that caldo for dinner too…it’s the absolute best.

We spend the bulk of prenatal visits in the third trimester working toward informed decision-making as we build birth plans. But an even bigger focus is on shaping the plan. Making sure that the birthing parent gets rest and nourishment is an investment in their recovery and bond with baby, as well as their long term health.

Being invited into someone’s home for birth and all it involves is such an incredible honor. This is such intimate work, such sacred work. I truly have the best job, and the best and most beloved clients.

P.S. I can’t *not* mention that my birth doula many years ago whipped up this same caldo while I was in labor, and I got to enjoy a taste of Mexican culture as I recovered from my home birth as well. It’s a soup that makes me feel loved.

This summer heat has been no joke! Overheating is more of a risk during and dehydration can decrease milk supply. Here are some good ways to take care of yourself during
💧Stay hydrated! You should be p*eing at least every 2 hours, with your p*e being a pale yellow/straw if you’re well hydrated (it’ll be bright yellow if you’ve been adding a B vitamin).
Add if you’re sweating! I recommend stevia or fruit sweetened options, or make your own, to avoid unnecessary added sugars.
🌊 Cool off by taking a dip in a pool or fresh water. Don’t forget the sunscreen! If you can’t get into cool water, make a foot bath at home.
🏠 Head to a cooling center in your community if your home is too hot
👯‍♀️Check on vulnerable friends and neighbors!

And head for emergency 🚨 care with sign of heat exhaustion: heavy sweating, cool and clammy skin, dizziness, fatigue, muscle cramps, nausea, a fast heartbeat, or a headache.

I’m thrilled to announce that the amazing Zitlali (she/her) has joined the Birth Roots team as my assistant. Zitlali has been saving the day with administrative support as we grow; and I couldn’t be more grateful. Welcome, Zitlali!

Y’all, it’s toxic out there! Please be safe—stay indoors with windows/doors closed and air conditioning going, along with a high quality air filter; or wear a K-95 mask or equivalent if you must be outdoors or don’t have a/c.
It’s like smoking ci******es just to breathe the smoke — which can lead to discomfort and also symptoms of preterm labor with prolonged exposure.
Check out cooling centers and public spaces like the library if needed.
And check on vulnerable friends and neighbors.

Only 6–8% of pregnancies are considered high-risk. Yet the birth-industrial complex treats nearly everyone as if they are.

Community midwifery is safe and evidence-based. It should be the standard of care for the over 90% of people giving birth who don’t need high-risk intervention.

When birthing care is rooted in community and culture, outcomes improve. Culturally-congruent midwifery means care that understands people, honors their traditions, and centers their dignity.

Every person should have access to compassionate, community-based care. This is why we’re working to put a midwife in every neighborhood!
