The kata, Pinan Godan, was brought into the Matsumura Seito Shorin Ryu System by one of Master Soken's senior student, Sensei Fusei Kise from the Shorinji Ryu System where Sensei Kise studied before becoming a student of Hohan Soken Sensei. The kata was modified to represent the fighting concepts and principles and the orthodoxy of Matsumura Family System. Hohan Soken (1889-1982), himself did not teach Pinan Sandan, Yondan and Godan as he was not taught these kata by his Uncle Nabe Matsumura. Soken Sensei subsequently was taught the remaining three Pinans by his good friend and student of Bushi Matsumura, Chosin Chibana (1885-1969), Creator of Kobayashi Shorin Ryu.

Attended the 28th annual weapons seminar and wine tasting with Hanshi Peter Carbone. Awesome time was experienced by all who attended. 5 hours of non stop interactive weapons training followed by a diner event with home made Greek Gyros that were to die for. Assorted dishes, desserts and wine from Hanshi’s personal wine cellar. The only training of its kind.

Naihanchi Shodan with one of many timing variants.

Naihanchi Shodan Kata. One of the most misunderstood katas in the Okinawan Shorin Ryu Karate system. The Naihanchi is a foundational kata which is essential to understanding the art of Karate. Many dismiss it as a beginner kata. It is taught in the begining because not only does it develop the foundational skillsets, concepts and principles, it takes years to master. Performing Naihanchi kata by the numbers, 1..2..3 is a learning pace for the beginner. If you continue to perform these katas in this manner at the black belt level, the boat has sailed leaving you on the pier. Change of timing and grouping of movement is key to understating the multitude of applications imbedded in these forms. Choking motobu stated that "all one needs is Naihanchi to be an effective (skillled) fighter. Hohan Soken stated " if you wish to know the secrets of my art, look at Naihanchi. Kentsu Yabu Stated "Karate begins and ends with Naihanchi". These masters understood the importance of Naihanchi in It's role to mastering Okinawan Karate.

Matsumura Seito Passai Sho kata. Kata is performed with an understanding of what and why the movements are arranged and performed in the kata. Speed in movement is not necessary when performing for self study. It is an exercise in precision and ex*****on of the applications demonstrated in the analysis of motion, movement angle and direction. Performing kata for performance sake alone is pointless absent self preservation concepts and principles. Bunkai or the breaking apart of individual and combinations of movement generate technique or ideas on application. Not knowing the type of attack one is defending against is also pointless when performing kata. To a finer point a breakdown of the breakdown is a deeper dive into the anatomical weakness that are the targets and function of kata.

I just returned from an awesome week of interactive and automatic response weapons training with Hanshi Carbone and the Ryukodo Dojo. Kyoshi Gerald Wicklund's Ryukyu Kenpo Kobudo in Liberty (Kanasa City) was the training site. Continuous nonstop training was the order of the day, everyday. Weapons in use were the Bo on Bo disarms, Tanbo / Bo disarms, Gusan (jo)/ bo disarms, and tonfa. Non stop interactive training works the repetitive skills into reflexive responsive and instinctive action to deal with close quarters attacks under pressure. This training is priceless. This is not your kihon and kata class seminar.
