5 years ago tomorrow morning I gave birth to this little guy. My friend Jennifer took turns with my husband applying counter pressure to my lower back for hours straight . There was a reason for that back labor, he was coming in face up! Although my friend wasn’t a trained doula, her support was invaluable. She advocated for me with hospital staff and provided me with such beautiful care. I will never forget the gift she gave me. Her presence was a necessary part of my natural hospital birth. ❤️

As doulas sometimes it is hard to put into words what support during labour looks like.

The support is so personalized and so much thought goes into navigating what support is best for each mother.

* Sometimes it is hands on, sometimes it is not at all.

*Sometimes it’s gentle guidance and sometimes its giving them the space they need to figure out what works for them.

* Sometimes we use our voices and other times there is support in the silence.

We often hear from our clients that our presence in and of itself helps them feel calm.

That by knowing someone is there that knows so much about birth but also knows them so well, makes the experience less stressful.

This picture is a perfect depiction of one way that we provide support, and we feel so damned blessed to be able to do it ❤️
