We help students find their best-fit schools while saving time and money—let’s say “hello” to your future together!

HelloCollege Founder Kevin Krebs recently appeared on WGN TV's Daytime Chicago to discuss the realities of modern college admissions and how parents can help their students prepare for the process.

One of his top tips: stop chasing rankings and start focusing on personal fit.

At HelloCollege, we help students build balanced college lists using our S.A.F.E. framework, which examines four key areas:

✅ Social Fit: Would your student actually thrive in this environment? Size, culture, community?
✅ Academic Fit: Do they offer what your student needs? And does your student have the academic record to get in?
✅ Financial Fit: Does the value match your family's budget? As Kevin says, "If the budget doesn't fit, don't submit."
✅ Employment Fit: What are the job placemnet rates for your student's major? What do the school's career services look like?

Students who prioritize personal fit are more likely to find a college where they will thrive.

Students are worried AI is coming for their jobs.

At HelloCollege, we'll help you understand how the job market is evolving, what your degree could mean after graduation and how AI can complement your skills rather than replace the need for them.

In a new EdSurge article, HelloCollege counselor Raymond Gonzales shares how our approach to informed career exploration can help you approach your future with greater clarity and confidence.

Parents, we're curious:

When you first started looking into the college process, where did you turn for information?

A school counselor? Google? Other parents? A book? Something else entirely?

Tell us below. We genuinely want to know how families are finding their footing.

Something we see families get wrong, over and over:

They treat college admissions like a transaction.

High GPA + good test score + list of activities = acceptance.

But admissions offices are not running a formula. They are building a class. And the students who get in at the most selective schools are the ones who made someone in that office feel something.

That's not a soft idea. It's the most practical thing we can tell you.

The essay that sounds like everyone else gets filed away. The one that's specific, honest, and a little unexpected gets read twice.

If you know a family approaching this process like a checklist, send this their way. The mindset shift alone is worth it.

FAFSA dates every family needs to know:

- FAFSA Opens: October 1st 2026 - Submit as early as possible. Aid is often first-come, first-served.
- FAFSA Deadline: June 30th 2027 - Last date for federal aid consideration
- Your state's deadline - Often earlier than the federal deadline. Look this up.
- School-specific deadlines - Check each college individually. They vary.

A few things families miss:
-- Your tax info needs to be ready before you start
-- Both student and parent need their own FSA ID
-- Submitting late can cost real money, even if you qualify

Save this. FAFSA season moves fast.

As a HelloCollege counselor, Raymond is always on the move, touring campuses around the country (and the world!) and bringing firsthand insight back to his students.

His travels also bring opportunities to connect with his students in person, like this recent visit with Danika and her mom while he was in Washington, D.C.

Danika is ready to take on the world, and we're excited to see where her journey leads!

Let’s clear something up.
AI can write an essay.
But it cannot write your essay.

Here’s how admissions officers know it’s AI:

It sounds like a motivational poster.

It refuses to be specific.

It avoids anything messy, imperfect, or deeply personal.

It uses phrases like “in today’s rapidly evolving world…” (a dead giveaway).

Your essay works when it feels like a conversation - not a press release.
So if AI is your starting point, great.
But the heart, the reflection, the honesty?
That has to come from you.

And that’s exactly where we help students shine.

“The current group of students is way more outcome-focused than at any time that I’ve been in this industry for almost three decades.”

More and more, we meet students looking beyond school name in favor of colleges that can clearly answer three important questions:

What will college actually cost me?
Will my degree lead to to a job?
How will you prepare me for the changing workforce?

Most families start the college process too late.

Not too late to apply. Too late to be strategic.

By the time a student is a senior, a lot of the most important decisions have already been made. Course selection, activities, relationships with teachers, how they've spent their summers.

The families who get the best outcomes start asking the right questions in sophomore or junior year:

- Does my student's course load reflect the colleges they're considering?
- Are their activities showing depth, or just a long list?
- Do they have a story that ties it all together?
- Do we understand how financial aid actually works before we fall in love with a school?
- Does anyone in our corner actually know how admissions offices think?

The process is long. The window to shape it is shorter than most people realize.

Save this if you're still in the early stages. The families who plan ahead are the ones who have options.
