This is one of the reasons we have a second amendment to the US Constitution.
On December 29, 2019, people gathered for Sunday worship at West Freeway Church of Christ in White Settlement, Texas. They came to pray, sing, and hear God’s Word.
Then a man stood up, pulled out a sh***un, and opened fire. Richard White and Anton “Tony” Wallace were killed. In only a few seconds, a peaceful church service became a scene of terror.
Jack Wilson led the church’s volunteer security team. He was also a trained fi****ms instructor and former reserve deputy. When the shots rang out, he drew his handgun.
Wilson did not fire in panic. He waited for a clear line because other church members were in front of him. Then he fired one round and stopped the gunman.
Wilson later said the whole attack lasted less than six seconds. Other armed church members also moved to protect the people, but Wilson’s shot ended the attack before the killer could take more lives.
A grand jury later took no action against Wilson. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott also gave him the Governor’s Medal of Courage for protecting the church.
This story is not about taking joy in violence. Two innocent men lost their lives, and their families faced deep grief. It is about a faithful man who was ready when evil entered a sacred place.
Churches should be places of peace, but peace does not mean being helpless. Trusting God and taking wise steps to protect others can stand together. Jack Wilson showed courage, skill, and love for his neighbors when every second mattered.
The lesson is clear. Evil must not be ignored, and innocent life is worth defending. Christians should pray, stay alert, and be ready to protect the flock God has placed in their care.
