How I keep my hens cool and safe during a heatwave: We went from 60 to high 90’s back to 60 degrees in a few days! Poor Terry is sensitive and I wasn’t sure if she was wheezing or panting or both but thankfully her cold plunge helped.
1. Umbrella: Even though hens need sun, extra coverage from the heat is essential on a sweltering day
2. Fan: same as us the girls sit in front of it at the hottest times of day
3. Cleanliness: making sure the hen house in clean with no build up. Their p**p gives off fumes that can cause infections, especially in the heat
4. Hydration: add minimal ice to their water to prevent it from getting warm. Chickens process heat differently (they don’t sweat and they process food differently) so the water should be cool but not ice cold all day long. I also usually add an extra water feeder with hydrohen (electrolytes)
5. Dunking water: in extreme cases like today where they girls are panting I will do a dunk to rapidly cool their body temperature. The water should be cool, not freezing so they don’t go into shock, and they should only be dunked to their neck. After a couple minutes they perk up and the cool lasts the rest of they day! Some people leave pools of water for their hens, but I personally don’t like to because the water heats up quickly. It can also cause bacterial infections in their feet, which we try to keep dry
6. Quarantine: Sometimes it’s a rough day or one of the girls really isn’t feeling well for various reasons and we have to separate them and bring one inside. We have a dog kennel we keep the hens in to monitor them while they cool down and possible receive other treatment (but still no AC, sorry gals!)

Max is working on a bench and I did some dry felting, beading and jewelry making, crochet, and of course spent some time in the garden with the hens 🐣
