Today I remember my first aikido teacher, Shigeru Kawabe Shihan—the one who opened the door.

He did not try to keep students for himself. Instead, he pointed me forward, toward deeper training and toward the source of the art. With generosity and humility, he directed me to train under Morihiro Saito Shihan, placing my growth above his own recognition.

At the time, I could not fully understand the significance of that selfless gesture. Only later did I realize how rare it is for a teacher to step aside so a student may walk further.

Everything I have received in Traditional Aikido traces back to that moment of selflessness.

Kawabe Sensei’s teaching was not only in technique, but in heart, example, and opportunity—doing what was right for a student’s path.

Today, on the 23rd anniversary of his passing in 2003, I bow in gratitude (gasshō) 合掌｡

As the New Year begins, we extend our heartfelt greetings to our friends and fellow practitioners near and far. May this year bring renewed dedication to training, clarity in practice, and gratitude for the opportunity to walk the path of Traditional Aikido together.

Through sincere keiko, mutual respect, and shared responsibility, may we continue to polish our technique, deepen our understanding, and support one another.

We wish you health, steady progress, and a year of meaningful practice.
