Yesterday, I was talking with our Dean of Students, Lauren Stidham, PCC, CPIC, and we discussed an age-old coaching truth.

Whether you are a business coach, an executive coach, or a health coach… after session three, it is all life coaching.

Why? Because you are coaching a whole person. There is no way out of this truth. In transformational coaching, we don’t coach compartments of the self; we coach toward the integration of self.

In July, the ICF posted about the three trends to watch for in coaching, and one of them was specializing.

This is a reminder that while you can specialize as a coach to grow a strong business, the best specialization is whole-person, is generative and is embedded in the pathways to integration.

It is coaching the agenda beneath the agenda and coaching to what is not being said that the doors to transformation open. This is because transformation ripens at the roots.

AI. Specialization. Coach-like leadership.

These aren’t just buzzwords — they’re three major trends reshaping the coaching profession in 2026.

1. AI is changing coaching — not necessarily replacing coaches.
AI can analyze data, summarize sessions, and support coaches behind the scenes. But the human connection, trust, empathy, and relationship at the heart of coaching remain uniquely human.

2. Specialization is becoming a competitive advantage.
Clients and organizations are increasingly looking for coaches with specific expertise — from team coaching and coaching supervision to emerging areas of professional practice.

3. Coaching skills are moving into every organization.
More leaders are shifting from simply giving answers to asking powerful questions, developing people, and creating cultures where employees can think, grow, and take ownership.

💡The big takeaway?

The coaches who thrive in the future won’t be the ones who resist change.

Five Emotional Literacy Truths Every Leader Should Know

✅ Every emotion has a purpose.

✅ There are no "good" or "bad" emotions.

✅ You can't control emotions...
but you can learn to navigate them.

✅ Your body, thoughts, and emotions always work together.

✅ The words you use to describe your emotions shape how you experience them.

The greatest leadership transformation often begins with a single question:

"What am I really feeling?"

Have you ever said, "I'm just stressed," when what you were actually feeling was something much more specific?

The words we use to describe our emotions shape how we understand them—and how we respond.

Emotional literacy isn't about having more emotions.
It's about having the language to recognize what's really happening beneath the surface.

When leaders can accurately identify emotions like anxiety, apprehension, regret, ambivalence, or anticipation, they gain the clarity needed to respond with intention instead of reaction.

✨ When you can name an emotion, you can begin to navigate it.

That's why emotional literacy is one of the most powerful leadership skills you can develop. It strengthens self-awareness, improves communication, builds trust, and creates healthier relationships—both personally and professionally.
