There’s a lot packed into a week of Outdoor Ed!

Our middle schoolers headed to NatureBridge for days filled with science, hiking, exploring, cabin life, campfires, and plenty of time together away from the usual routines of school.

But when we asked them about their favorite part, what stood out wasn’t just what they did. It was the time together, the conversations, the laughs, the new bonds, and the chance to experience something as a whole middle school community.

For our 6th and 7th graders, it’s an opportunity to stretch themselves, grow in independence, and build relationships across grade levels. And for our 8th graders, there’s something especially meaningful about experiencing Outdoor Ed one last time, this time as the oldest students in the group.

We could tell you what makes Outdoor Ed special. But we thought it would be better to let our students tell you.

Tonight’s the night, dads!

No agenda, no presentation...no homework! Just a chance to grab a beer, catch up with familiar faces, meet a few new ones, and enjoy a night out with other GSLS dads.

One of the best parts of our school community is the community that happens outside the school day, too. Sometimes it really is as simple as showing up and spending time together.

Hispanic Heritage Month began at GSLS this week with our Student Council and Spanish teacher, Mrs. Ham at Monday Assembly! Student Council introduced some of the histories and traditions they’ll be exploring in Spanish class from September 15–October 15.

But some of the most meaningful learning this month won’t come from a textbook or a presentation. It will come from our own community!

Mrs. Ham has invited 10 GSLS families to share their cultures, traditions and stories with our students throughout Hispanic Heritage Month. It’s an opportunity for children to learn directly from the families they see at school every day, and for our students to recognize that the different experiences and traditions represented within our community are something worth knowing and celebrating.

We love that our students aren’t simply learning about cultures, they’re learning from one another, asking questions, listening to stories and developing the curiosity and understanding that help them become thoughtful members of a larger world.

Thank you to our Student Council, Mrs. Ham, and especially to the GSLS families who are opening a window into their own heritage for our students!

It looks like a thank you card, but there’s a much bigger lesson inside!

Our Kindergarteners are learning about community helpers, and this week that learning is moving beyond the classroom. They’ve been creating thank you cards for local first responders in preparation for meeting Novato firefighters this week, followed by a visit to the police department.

Of course, they’re learning about the important jobs people do in our community. But they’re learning something else, too:

To notice the people around them.
To appreciate what others do for them.
To express gratitude.
And to understand that being part of a community means each of us has something to contribute.

Some of the most important lessons of childhood happen when academic learning and character development come together. Reading, writing, math and science matter deeply. So do curiosity, empathy, confidence, responsibility and connection.

That’s why something as simple as making a card isn’t just a fun Kindergarten project. It’s one small way our students are learning to become thoughtful, engaged members of the world around them.

And at five years old, that’s a pretty wonderful place to start!

Two nights, one big thank you to our GSLS parents!

Being a school parent is a full time gig, and you deserve a night off! Grab your favorite people and join us for Dad's Night Out at HenHouse Brewing Co. (Thurs, Sept 17 @ 6pm) or Mom's Night Out at Greystones Lounge (Thurs, Sept 24 @ 6:30pm). Good drinks, good company, and a chance to connect with other GSLS families outside the carpool line. We can't wait to see you there!
