Summer Research Showcase! In June and July, Senior David Chritton worked on a research project, titled "Preparing a Critical Edition of an Early Sixteenth-Century Latin Manuscript Leaf of the Nativity of Saint Onuphrius," under the direction of Dr. Sarah Noonan. As a part of this project, David also visited Loras College, in Iowa, to conduct research on their extensive collection.

Congratulations to David on their excellent work this summer!!

We are so excited to welcome students to the 2026-2027 academic year! The campus is buzzing with energy on this beautiful, late summer day, and the English department is ready to introduce students to the power of language to alter perspectives and spark action in the world.

As both readers and writers of literature, we are part of global community made up of all those who have also turned to the written word to better understand themselves and the world around them. Stories bring people together. They change us. And they help us both to see the need for and to enact change in the world around us. At this time of new beginnings, we look forward to the new communities and transformations that stories will give rise to over the coming year.

Thank you to Tess Hayes '25 for highlighting SMC's fantastic Rare Book Room collection! There are so many treasures in this collection, and multiple English classes provide students with the opportunity to conduct original research into its holdings, which range from medieval manuscripts to 19th century editions of Dickens' works. Congratulations to all of the English students who presented at today's Symposium! Multiple students from Dr. Renfro's Nature and Environmental Writing course read from their creative works. Two more students then presented on their research projects that has been supported by internal grants. One discussed their research in Sevilla, Spain, and the other discussed their research into medieval paleography. Fascinating presentations, all around!

Congratulations to the editors and contributors of this year's Chimes volume! At the launch party last night, ten contributors read from their newly published pieces. It was an excellent opportunity to celebrate the creativity and talent of the students within the Saint Mary's College community! If you come across a Chimes volume on campus (there are many in the English suite), pick one up. They are free!

* We unfortunately couldn't post images of all the authors reading at the event, due to image upload constraints. But everyone did a fantastic job!

Congratulations to rising senior, David Chritton, for presenting their paper, "Make the stomach believe": Embodied Truth-Telling in The Things They Carried," at the Butler University Undergraduate Research Conference last week! Their paper was fantastic, and it's great to see Saint Mary's students sharing their work with the broader regional community.
