Education, Schooling and Society (ESS)

The Education, Schooling, and Society (ESS) minor uses a liberal arts perspective to reflect on and influence the role of education in society.

Education cannot be adequately understood from any one academic perspective. Therefore, ESS is designed to encourage students to view educational issues through the lenses of diverse disciplines such as anthropology, English, history, philosophy, political science, psychology, sociology, and theology. The curriculum requires students to take courses both outside their major and in two additional d

isciplines, enabling students to recognize that a complex approach is more likely to reveal understanding of education and of education reform.

Meet Madison Chambers!

“I am a senior from Scottsdale, AZ studying psychology with a supplementary major in ESS. While at ND I have carved my own path in researching the intersections of sport psychology and education with the help of amazing ESS and Psych faculty!

My favorite ESS class has got to be Educational Psychology with Dr. Christensen! I took this class as a sophomore and integrated what I learned into my work as an assistant pre-school teacher. Now, I TA for this class and I love having the opportunity to sit in on such insightful discussion again!

After grad I will be starting my PhD in Sport Psychology at Michigan State University. I am so excited to continue my research and dive deeper into ways in which sports can be a net positive for the mental health of individuals of all sorts of backgrounds.“

Next up, we have Senior Tavin Martin!

“Hi yall! My name is Tavin Martin, and I’m a senior studying Global Affairs and Latino Studies with a minor in ESS. During my time at Notre Dame, I have loved all my ESS classes, but Literacy Tutoring in Classrooms with Jodene Morrell holds a special place in my heart. Throughout the semester, we analyzed best pedagogical practices for literacy education in elementary schools while volunteering with a local elementary school to translate research into practice. I still tutor one of the students I met that semester today—two years later!”

With graduation right around the corner, join us in recognizing some of our amazing graduating Seniors! Starting off, we have Kayle Lauck!

“My name is Kayle Lauck and I am a senior studying Political Science with minors in ESS and Politics, Philosophy, and Economics.

I took a spectacular ESS class my sophomore year with Dr. Brian Collier called “The History of Native American Education,” which shaped the rest of my time on campus and my post-grad plans. Through this class, I also got to know Will Newkirk, the Director of the American Indian Catholic Schools Network, and explored the possibility of a year of service after graduation. I ended up completing a senior ESS capstone, entitled: “Pathways and Barriers: Understanding the Higher Education Decisions of Graduates of Catholic High Schools Located on American Indian Reservations,” advised by Greg O’Donnell. Next year, I will be a volunteer middle school writing teacher at the Maȟpíya Lúta School on the Pine Ridge Reservation back home in South Dakota!”
