A close relative came to stay with me for a 10-day visit. She is my closest-to-sister that I’ll ever have.

She opened my DISASTER of reusable containers and asked if she could tidy them.

Yes, please! I’ll watch your toddler!

When it came time to purge, she couldn’t believe that we, as a family of three with travel dogs, actually used THIS MANY BOTTLES!

We do. And they take up a whole damn prime cabinet in our small kitchen. We’ve dedicated at least 3 bottles per person and a couple for the pets.

I have 4. 2 are designed WATER ONLY. 2 could be anything. I try to drink 1/2 my weight in ounces of water a day. I like my own coffee and tea better than bought.

I fill all 4 with filtered water and put them in a cooler when I drive to Happytown Cottage, Maine.

My family has saved SO MANY POUNDS of could be trash. I dedicate a lot of intention to how much we as a family consume disposables, and how much waste we will create over our lifetimes.

What many see as clutter, I see as my responsibility to the planet that holds us- by a thread.

In my late Teens and 20s, I spent a lot of time shouting my opinions all over the place. I hopped on busses and held signs wearing t-shirts with loud messages.

It was exhausting. And surely, it didn’t make one bit of difference in the world. I’m a little embarrassed about what I thought activism looked like back then.

Every 4 years, when elections arrive, I see so much hatred and division sprout up from the corners of this platform, our communities and in this country as a whole.

It’s exhausting to witness. And none of it changes anyone’s opinion or view of what they feel “should” be.

Why do we do this? It’s not helpful. It doesn’t shift anything in a positive direction… it just creates MORE division, hatred and sickness.

What are you doing to help your community and this country be united and strong? It certainly doesn’t look like calling people names or spewing opinions about other people’s opinions.

What will it take to unearth mutual respect, tolerance and empathy in this “land of the free”?

I’m here for it. ✌🏼
