We’re kicking off our monthly community Sustainability Series Saturday, August 29th with our potluck & movie night - screening the documentary Dirt! The Movie, an official selection for the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.

Bring a dish to share. We’ll break bread together at our communal table then gather to watch the movie.

In the garden, we pair plants that help each other thrive. One fixes nitrogen, another offers shade, a third keeps the pests away. None of them are competing for the same thing at the same time. They just make room for each other.

So what’s the human equivalent of companion planting? 🌱

Maybe it’s showing up for people who are in a different season than you. Offering what you have plenty of, without keeping score. Growing near each other, not just next to each other.

This crew is proof that when you plant people together with intention, something good comes up. 💚

📢 Introducing our new Sustainability Series!
Starting this August, we’re gathering together monthly for potluck dinners & a movie, and for quiet evenings over a good book.
🍿Potluck & Movie Nights: Every other month, Saturdays at First Parish Church of Norwell. We’ll share a meal and watch a film — classic, animated, documentary, or drama — that broadens how we think about sustainability. ($5/person, in partnership with First Parish’s Climate Justice Team)

📚 Sustainability Book Club: In the months we’re not gathering for a movie, we’re talking through the ideas (and people) shaping how we think about land and community. (Free, RSVP required — space is limited)

Old New England garden wisdom: whatever you want on your table before frost, get it in the ground by the Fourth of July.

Summer squash is one of the last easy windows — direct-sow now and you’re looking at harvest by late August into September. Loose, warm soil. Full sun. Water deeply while seedlings establish, then let the plant do what it does: sprawl, flower, produce more than you expected.(Including the one that hid behind some leaves and grew enormous!)

That’s the beautiful part about growing vegetables — especially squash. One healthy plant rarely feeds just one household. It feeds the neighbor who mentioned they miss their grandmother’s garden. It feeds the cookout table. It feeds whoever you hand a paper bag to and say, “here, I had extra.”

Growing food is not a solo act. Even in the ground, one seed is planted so that many can eat.

This weekend, as you’re at the grill or the garden bed: what’s one thing you’re growing that you could share?
