Special Guest Miss. Cathy DeCesare, Co-Chair of Norwalk Early Childhood Council, read to our preschoolers this morning!

Story read: Mother Bruce, By Ryan T. Higgins. The children loved the clever, humorous and beautiful illustrations. A story that could even have the adults engaged!

Do you all have favorite books and stories you like to read to your children?

Reading to children of all ages is an important way to help them build language skills! By reading to them, having conversations with them, exploring other activities that promote language and literacy, they learn new words and learn different ways to use their language and communicate with each other as well as the adults in their lives.

Ways to promote more language and literacy at home:

- Reading: Simple as that! But, if you’re not as much as an enthusiastic reader you can ask questions as you read to your child, start with shorter books, some books may come with an audio book that make it easier to read along.
- Letters and Alphabet: Encourage your children to look for letters/words everywhere: on product labels, on brochures, grocery store circulars, etc.
- Fun Activities: Example…Connect the Dots with letters! Take a piece of paper, write the same letters (4 or 5 letters at a time might be helpful) and have your children find and draw a line towards the matching letters. As a challenge, use lower case and upper case letters!

Today, we had a special visit from a Dental Hygienist. The children got to listen to a story called: Daniel Goes to the Dentist. This story was perfect for our little ones who needed some reassurance as they take their seat in the dentist’s chair for their next Dental Appointment. The children learned what steps are taken during their dental appointment as well as the tools and equipment that will be used.
It’s important to talk to your children about good health habits such as proper nutrition, proper hand washing and proper brushing. Lead by example!

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children start seeing their dentist every 6 months, or twice a year.

It’s important to get regular checkups as it helps prevent cavities and tooth decays. Regular checkups and dental habits will ensure that their mouths will stay healthy throughout their lives.

Older Pre-K Field Trip!

We are excited to announce our Preschoolers had their very first field trip to the Library. This week they have been learning about Community Helpers and decided to visit their favorite community helper: A Librarian. They were so happy and excited to meet them and see all the books! As our Preschoolers are going to soon be going to public school, we wanted to make sure they are prepared for the many fun filled field trips they will have in the near future. We believe field trips make concepts more memorable, just as much as hands on activities. They were such good listeners and used their quiet voices in the library. They chose a book for the classroom on caterpillars. The Librarian even read them a very special caterpillar pop up book and gave them all bookmarks to take home. We are very proud of them and the manners they used while talking to the Librarians.

Super Bowl Weekend! Any sports fans out there?!

We had a fun filled Friday with the Twos A Room versus the Twos B Room aka the Eagles versus the Chiefs! Miss. Casey did our lovely halftime performance with the children and they loved their music and movement.
The kids had a BALL 🏈 playing their makeshift football game. Through teamwork, courage, great self esteem and determination they tried their very hardest and never quit! And after all their hard work, they were treated to some pizza and treats because what’s the Super Bowl without a party!?

Thank you to our One Year Old Kiddos for making us some football decorations using a fun Tape Resist Art Project!

Twos Winter Wonderland ❄️

Today, the children got cozy in their winter wonderland! Pretending to warm their hands by the fire, participating in an indoor snowball fight, listening to winter songs, listening to a story and saying hello to all our Winter Woodland Friends!
They had so much fun!

Gingerbread Cookies, Presents and The Grinch!

Today, as one of our many festive activities this month, the Preschoolers made their very own gingerbread cookies!
They were so excited and patient as we had many friends to help and participate. When in the process of mixing all the ingredients, we made great conversation about tablespoons and teaspoons.
The children took turns pouring and mixing our ingredients, pouring is a great practical life skill! Many of our 4’s noticed and shouted out their observations. “It looks like sand!” “It was hard to mix!” “It smells like pumpkin pie!”

Baking/cooking with the children encourages their thinking and creativity. It also allows children them to use the knowledge they have and apply it by measuring and counting, following a sequence and/or directions, and cause and effect.

As this was happening, right down the hall in the Older Twos Room, they were talking about their letter of the month G! They made their very own ‘G’ Grinchs and also started a Christmas project for their parents (which I will not spoil!!)

The Younger Twos focused on PRESENTS! They used teamwork to stack, count and then unwrap “presents”. Which they had a blast doing! And as we reuse our materials, they did a project using the remaining wrapping paper!

Visit from Mrs. Claus!
The children enjoyed the various songs and stories by Mrs. Claus and got a little treat after telling her what they all wanted for Christmas!

Culture and Diversity Week 🌎

Our Preschoolers had fun learning about the culture of their peers. They each got to bring in a cultural dish from home to share with the class!

Teaching diversity and culture to the children teach them to respect and celebrate the differences in all people. Learning about different cultural aspects not only offers new experiences for children but it also helps them realize that we are all humans, despite differences in how we look or dress, or what we eat or celebrate.

For art, the children made a handprint Menorah, representing what they learned today about the holiday Hanukkah. Tomorrow they will focus on Kwanzaa.

Some of our friends are from: Colombia, El Salvador, Haiti, Mexico, Italy

Some dishes shared: Haitian Beef and Vegan Patties, Arroz Con Leche, Pupusas, Buñuelos, Panetone

Fun, hands-on learning experiences and lots of play are always our favorite ways to teach toddlers and preschoolers! And because of that its been very eventful this month at CELC!

The children have been learning about Fall (Autumn) and what that means! They have been watching the tree leaves change color, felt the temperature grow colder as well as talk about savory snacks, scents and special traditions.

We did something a little different this week and had a Staff Pumpkin Contest! It was very fun and we thank our parents and kids for voting! The children also got to carve and decorate their own pumpkins in their classrooms, discussing what makes a pumpkin a pumpkin and what is inside a pumpkin!

More fun to come! Super excited about this upcoming Monday as it is our Halloween/Fall Festival.

Fire Safety Awareness

We all know Fire is dangerous. Though few fire incidents are avoidable and predicted early, the majority are not; thus, fire safety precautions are necessary. Which is why we continuously try to spread awareness to not only the children but to parents as well. It is important to explain to the children that fire is dangerous, and give them tips like "Stop, Drop and Roll" and to stay close to the ground when smoke is in the air. By telling them what they can do, it eventually helps them feel more confident in the case of an emergency.

This month the children got to do a fire drill, meet firefighters, meet Sparky 🐶 and learn about a fire truck as well as reading books and working on many projects regarding to fire safety.

Thank you to the Norwalk Fire Department for taking the time to meet our kiddos! We greatly appreciate it and they enjoyed your company.

How can you teach your child about fire safety at home?

- Keep children at least 3 feet away from stoves, heaters or anything that gets hot.
- Keep smoking materials locked up in a high place.
- Never leave lighters or matches where children can reach them.
- Never play with lighters or matches when you are with your children.
- Talk about smoke detectors.
- Make a Family Escape Plan.
- Practice Stop, Drop and Roll!
