This article made me question how much would be enough when we are thinking of training, classes, workshops and dialogues related to diversity and inclusion.
We are having civil rights crisis. We cannot wait anymore. #MLKLegacy @adamjohnfoss

Remembering Yuri Kochiyama

On what would’ve been his 95th birthday, we honor and remember Malcolm X and share a lesser known story about him…

In the Spring of 1964, Malcolm X visited the Kochiyama family’s apartment in the Manhattanville Projects on 126th Street for an event organized by the Harlem Parents Committee. He came to meet the Hibakusha (Hiroshima and Nagasaki bomb victims) and Japanese reporters who were visiting NYC as part of a world peace study tour. That night Malcolm spoke about Ho Chi Minh as a hero and the war in Vietnam in terms of third world solidarity. He said,

“The struggle of Vietnam is the struggle of the whole Third World – the struggle against colonialism, neo-colonialism, and imperialism.”

A few months later, Malcolm embarked on haj (pilgrimage to Mecca) which radically shifted his understanding of Islam and his views on inter-racial solidarity. He sent the Kochiyama family 11 postcards during his travels. This is the postcard he sent from Kuwait in September of 1964.

[05/16/20]   If we were on campus, we would have come together to celebrate graduating students of color. You, who have played an instrumental role in making our campus community a better place: a more diverse, complex and dynamic environment. We know how important it is to create spaces where students of color can feel heard, validated, understood and respected. That we were able to play a role in your college experience has been our privilege. The spring of senior year leading up to graduation is a very special time. You have worked hard to achieve this milestone. We know students and families have made many sacrifices and along the way you have persevered and overcome obstacles and bumps in the road. It is with mixed emotions that you graduate from college. This year in particular.

Cherish the memories of time spent in your classes, labs, creating art and music, attending speakers and performances, in club meetings and sports, leadership and service commitments, hanging out with friends and just being in your favorite spaces on campus.

Graduation is one of many special events and rituals that not only marks the end but also the start of the next phase. We will truly miss you. We have enjoyed seeing you grow and be transformed by your college experiences. If you were the first in your family to graduate from college, this is an especially significant milestone. We thank you for your contributions to our campus. You are smart and talented young people with a commitment to racial and social justice and have so much to offer this world that desperately needs your gifts and talents.

We SEE you. We APPRECIATE you. We CELEBRATE you.

Enjoy this slideshow from your time at Wheaton!
