Shot of the day goes to for this 25-yard bunker shot off a slightly downhill lie to an elevated short side hole location. You need lots of speed to hit the ball far enough and get enough height. You need a high finish to help you get height. You need the clubface open so the leading edge doesn’t dig too much. You need your spine and shaft right on top of the ball to insure you hit the sand in the right place. And most of all you need big-time commitment that allows you to accelerate to the finish.

If your clubface tends to be open at the top of your back swing you might be better off playing a draw. Likewise, if your club face tends to be closed at the top of the backswing you might be better playing a fade. Draws start to the right which will require a slightly open clubface and fades start to the left which require a slightly closed clubface at impact.

1st lesson with this scratch golfer looking for a reliable shot shape. Golf ball was hooking a lot and missing left. Top hand grip was too high in his palm. Clubface was aimed well right of target while trying to play a fade (mismatch) and his thought through the ball was to get the hands in front of clubhead more through impact (swinging too far out to the right- creating hook spin). Getting the grip under the heel pad of his top hand gave him more speed. Aiming the clubface more left (or square) at setup helped him find the center of the clubface more and squaring up the shaft at impact instead of pulling the grip through impact, put the ball back in the fairway with a powerful fade.

Simplify your swing with this little drill. Speed through the ball. Hit it solid!
