Sailor Band Families,
We would like to make you aware that within the next week, you will be receiving a survey about priorities in the development of the May 2018 bond proposal. We know you get a lot of communications from the school district, but this is one to really watch out for! Your responses have the potential to shape what Mona Shores looks like for the next few decades.
This bond proposal has the potential to raise $70-80 million dollars for upgrades to Mona Shores' facilities without raising current debt levy. This communication is not intended in any way to influence your future vote, but rather to inform you about some of the possible enhancements that could be made to our band facilities and encourage you to provide feedback about what should be covered by funds raised through this bond effort. We are simply compiling data at this point, and your voice should be heard.
There are several performing arts questions on the survey that will help to focus priorities for the bond proposal. One question is about a dedicated turf practice field primarily for the marching band (and other groups when not in use by us) located just to the south of the east parking lot. This turf practice field would enable us to rehearse in a safe, secure, and comfortable environment. Presently, practicing on the East Parking Lot asphalt amplifies the heat index during warm rehearsals, and we have to contend with cars parking in or driving in and out of our rehearsal space.
Another question asks you to prioritize our antiquated auditoriums at the middle school and Ross Park for upgrades. Our facilities at the middle school and elementary schools are not equipped to showcase the amazing work these kids are doing.
Finally, there is an area for comment. We believe that an addition placed to the east of the middle school band room to house our percussion classes/equipment is vital to our vision of equal instruction between wind players and percussionists. Most importantly, we have to address instrument storage for band at the middle school. We need a dedicated, workable and outfitted space for our hundreds of students to store their instruments during the day and have access to them to so that they may take them home to practice.
