𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞’𝐬 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐦𝐧𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐝: The columns along the lake were created by a cataclysmic explosion 760,000 years ago, cold water percolated down leading to hot volcanic ash being spewed up to form them! REMEMBER to pack in and pack out your trash, leave the area better than when you visited and preserve this landscape for future generations! 📍Crowley Lake Columns, Mono County in California D͟R͟I͟V͟I͟N͟G͟ T͟I͟P͟S͟ ➡️ driving through Yosemite (Tioga Pass, HWY 120 is currently open) would be the best route- to beat traffic I usually head out around 8pm, or in the wee hours of the morning around 2am ➡️ if you do exactly as I did- the drive shouldn’t take you longer than 5.5-6hrs (280 miles). 𝐇𝐈𝐊𝐄 𝐃𝐄𝐓𝐀𝐈𝐋𝐒 If you want to avoid a long hike to here and instead drive closer to the trailhead, read the tips below ⬇️ 🎫 no permits required to access this rock formation 🚗 there are makeshift parking lots, one for ➡️ 2WD vehicles ➡️ 4WD vehicles comment “COLUMN” for parking coordinates! Remember these are not designated parking lots, more so makeshift lots. Park along the side of the gravel road to allow hikers and other cars to drive up. 🚨 if you have a 4WD, and trust me when I say 4WD (+ high clearance preferred), you can make it up the treacherous hill! It’s a spectacle to watch as the hill is EXTREMELY STEEP! 🗺️ google maps works just fine to reach this spot, but please hike in if you’re not in a 4WD Hike details: 4.2 miles, 515ft elevation gain, out & back ⏰ When to go- columns are only visible late Fall, through Winter, and early Spring. Other times, it is submerged in water. 🐜 use an insect repellent, the short hike down from the 4WD trailhead (< 0.5 miles) has brush that houses multiple species of bugs and insects. For the past 20 years, it has been an absolute joy watching newborns grow into school-age kids (and even beyond with after-school, evening, and weekend care). Ms. Margarit poured her heart and soul into this small business, and now she is officially retiring. 💙🐧
