Training our balance, body control and explosiveness with some sumo wrestling with our youth. Sumo wrestling pairs well with karate because the ability to keep yourself upright while controlling an aggressor is an important skill in self defense. It allows us to train our stance, posture and control with a resisting opponent.

Some tough kindergarten and 1st graders at Verner Elementary showing off their sidekick training. Sidekicks take a lot of practice to learn but can be a very effective tool for self defense as it is a powerful kick that can stop the opponents movement toward you.

In weapons sparring range is a huge advantage. Bo is very strong because of it's reach and power. If you have the shorter weapon you must rely on speed and aggression to get in and close distance. Get past the bo's guard and blitz with short range attacks. The challenge is breaking thru that long range of the bo without being incapacitated in the process. Sai and tonfa provide armor to your arms which you use to shield yourself on the entry and they are very effective close range. Sai and tonfa can also be swung out to attack the hands of the bo person to reduce their capacity to use their weapon effectively.

Congratulations to Jared Smith who earned his brown belt III last Thursday. He persevered through a challenging 3 hour test and proved his discipline, knowledge and perseverance. One step closer to black belt!

Congratulations to Holli Welch for earning her Purple belt advanced at Falcon 1 Karate this Thursday. She has been a reliable student and coach over the years. We look forward to seeing her earn her black belt!
