Description

In this presentation, we will take a historical look at how humanity has regarded the red planet as a mysterious, inhabited sister of Earth. Our perception of Mars as habitable, was challenged by the first probes we sent there in the mid-1960’s. Since then, our understanding of Martian geology has expanded dramatically through orbiters, robotic landers, and rovers deployed over the past fifty years.

Today, Mars is the only planet we know of inhabited solely by robots, culminating in the sophisticated rover science laboratories Curiosity and Perseverance operating there today. We will review geological, geophysical, and geochemical data that paints Mars with a warmer, wetter past that may have been a cradle for life beyond Earth.
