Free newsletter: https://mailchi.mp/sqthinking/newsletter SQ Thinking is the science of learning! We translate executive functioning and WRITING research into simple, but powerful learning tools that QUICKLY improve student outcomes. Research and the science of learning guide everything we do. Our programs are available both in traditional print and digital e-learning formats. We offer three resea
rch-based programs: SQ Sentence, SQ Write and SQ Organize; all with on-site and e-training formats. SQ Sentence is a research-based and direct instructional sentence-writing program that teaches students how to apply the executive functioning skills of self- questioning, whole-to-part analysis, verbal rehearsal, and self-monitoring to create logical, mature, and well-constructed sentences. Students follow SQ Sentence Maps that break sentences down into parts. After identifying words for these parts, they put the whole sentence together. Research clearly indicates that in order to expect organized and well-constructed sentences from our students, we must directly teach these patterns to them. Instead of an open-ended writing task, students follow sequential Sentence Maps to convert their ideas into well-constructed and grammatically correct sentences. Once a basic noun-verb map is mastered, students progress, step by step, to more complex sentence maps. Key components of SQ Sentence include:
Individualized Word Banks for student reference;
step-by-step SQ Sentence Maps for sentence expansion;
Student Workbooks for practice and repetition to attain mastery. SQ Write is a comprehensive research-based curriculum that applies an executive functioning approach to teaching and learning how to write effective essays. The executive functioning skills students learn and practice using SQ Write become part of their repertoire for managing writing tasks in all subject areas. Using the SQWrite Thought OrganizerTM and original Self-Questioning Q-Card, you’ll see just how easy it is to be an effective, organized, and self-reliant writer when taught how to leverage oral language skills together with executive functioning skills. SQ Write employs a simple yet powerful process that can be used in all tiers of instruction to help late elementary, middle and high school students become self-reliant writers who create high-quality structured writing products. Key components of SQ Write include:
Question Card (Q-Card)
Thought Organizer
Individualized Editing Booklet
Progress Monitoring essay charting
SQ Organize is a tutorial-based academic planner that applies research-based executive functioning skills. Students learn to independently initiate, self-monitor, and complete homework. SQ Organize fosters homework independence by directly teaching students to develop to-do lists, manage materials, record and prioritize homework assignments, and estimate assignment completion times. By generating a daily homework time management plan, students feel in control and empowered because the plan is organized and predictable. With increased empowerment, homework procrastination decreases and assignment completion increases.
