August Pre-Conference Event: The Søren Kierkegaard Anti-Conference

Join Kierkegaard scholars for an experience-based pre-conference event at Kulturcentret ENTEN-ELLER in Copenhagen on Tuesday, August 11, 2026 (1–4:30 pm), exploring the theme "Is the Eternal Always the Same?" through artistic, somatic, and participatory approaches rather than traditional podium-style presentations.

Orchestrated by C.F. Damgaard and electric guitarist Peter Tinning, this 250 DKR event serves as a creative prelude to the SKC Annual Conference on "Totality and Plurality" beginning the following day.

We are capturing audio and written testimonials as part of the 50th Anniversary celebration of the founding of the Hong Kierkegaard Library, which resulted from Howard and Edna Hong’s generous donation of their Kierkegaard collection to St. Olaf College in 1976.

Did you know the story of how Kierkegaard came to St. Olaf begins in a small Minnesota town, with a young man named Howard Hong picking up a biography of Ibsen?

Pastor Andres Albertsen of Vinje Lutheran Church shares a beautiful reflection on the thread that connects a name carved into Vinje's sanctuary frieze, a farmer's bookshelf in Willmar, and the translations that brought Kierkegaard to generations of English-speaking readers. A lovely read as we approach the 10th International Kierkegaard Conference this June.

Pastor Andres' passion for Kierkegaard is not what directed his path to ministry at Vinje, but he has, of course, managed to find a very unique story

to an open lecture by Markus Kleinert (CFvS Foundation Munich & Kierkegaard-Forschungsstelle, Max Weber Center for Advanced Cultural and Social Studies, Erfurt University),

which is entitled “To be Blissful: On Feelings and Sentimentality.”
The lecture will take place on May 22, 2026, 14:15-16:00

🎉 Introducing Our 2026 Junior Research Fellows! 🎉

Two St. Olaf students will join a group of 23 international junior scholars this July at the Kierkegaard Summer Institute:

Miranda Gladstein (Philosophy & Psychology) will explore Kierkegaard's conception of madness through his Concluding Unscientific Postscript to Philosophical Crumbs and beyond.

Juan Carlos De Pablo Romero Villareal (Philosophy & Political Science) will investigate how Kierkegaard's existential project grapples with the challenge of external limitations.

We are pleased to announce issue no. 1 of Filozofia 2026.

This issue includes a piece by Zoltán Gyenge on "The Emergence of the Concept of Existence: Schelling and Kierkegaard."

"In philosophy, the term ὑποκείμενον literally means “underlying thing,” which in Latin is “subiectus,” but in fact it means something which can predicate other things but cannot be a predicate of others, which in German philosophy corresponds to Schelling’s “Unbedingtes.” Contrary to the opinion of many interpreters, there is a very close link between German idealism and twentieth-century existentialism. Kierkegaard attended Schelling’s lectures in Berlin in 1841 – 1842, where he became familiar with Schelling’s late philosophy in detail, and from this he developed his own concept of existentialism. The paper will show how, by transcending the notions of ὑποκείμενον and the subject, an existential philosophy emerges that will become a dominant feature of European culture in the twentieth century."
