Carleton alum Brent Cusher '00, Asst. Professor in Leadership and American Studies at Christopher Newport University, will present
"The Mutual Dependence of Leadership & Liberal Education" on Thursday, 1-21 at 7:30 pm in Gould Library Athenaeum.

Professor Cusher earned his BA in political science at Carleton College, and his PhD in political theory/political science at the University of Toronto. His main areas of interest are public and political leadership, bad leadership, statesmanship, law and legal philosophy. His publications include: “How does Law Rule? Plato on Habit, Political Education, and the Art of Legislation,” Journal of Politics 76:4 (2014) and “From Natural Catastrophe to the Human Catastrophe: Plato on the Origins of Law,” Law, Culture, and the Humanities 9:2 (2013).

Carleton is fielding an Ethics Bowl team. As the name suggests, Ethics Bowl is a venue for competitive intercollegiate debate on meaningful questions. Students address concrete, practical cases and make arguments regarding what standards ought to govern our behavior and judgment and how those standards ought to be applied. Students are not assigned a position to argue; they decide for themselves what position to argue, based on their own reflection and reasoning.

Carleton's team will compete in a regional event in San Jose, California in early December. (Expenses paid by EthIC.)

If you think you might be interested in participating, and if you're willing to meet weekly for practices during fall term, please come to an information meeting next Monday evening (September 30), at 7:00 PM, in Willis 203.

No prior background in debate or philosophy is necessary.
