: President Larry Gould — a scientist with a healthy respect for religion, and acutely conscious of being the first non-minister to serve as Carleton president — was the driving force in the College's creation of both an academic Department of Religion and the Office of the Chaplain.

Six people to date have served in the position of College Chaplain, a role now described as working to deepen the College’s spiritual, ethical, justice, and community life. This week’s throwback takes a look at each of the six! Check out the individual photo captions to learn more.

: A dozen years ago, as part of a Cinema and Media Studies class project, students created and filmed several episodes of a Carleton game show, “Floor Feud.” Teams competed Family-Feud-style to come up with popular answers to Carleton-themed questions!

Below is a Vimeo link to the first episode, with four CAMS majors squaring off against a team from Fourth Evans. Charlie Imhoff ’17 was the host, and the five student producers were Vincent DeZutti ’16, Julia Bindler ’16, Angely Guevara ’16, Kelsey Qu ’17, and Lia Seraydarian ’16.

: This summer marks the 60th anniversary of the first of several Carleton-sponsored summer sessions on campus for Project ABC (A Better Chance).

Project ABC was a national program aimed at assisting highly motivated students — aged 13–17, from economically and educationally disadvantaged backgrounds — with their transitions to becoming scholarship students at independent secondary boarding schools in the fall.

These photos are all from the first Project ABC summer of 1966. With the aid of 14 “resident tutors” from the Classes of ’66 to ’69, Carleton hosted 80 ABC students that year for an intensive eight-week experience!

After two months with AMC, we are saying goodbye to Kelly Santillan Villegas, a Psychology student at Carleton College on the pre-health track, who joined us through Isla Internships Abroad.

During her internship, Kelly supported AMC’s work on noncommunicable diseases by developing ideas for awareness activities, researching interventions for postpartum depression and learning about efforts to promote HPV vaccination in Kosovo.

Thank you, Kelly, for your dedication and valuable contribution.

We wish you every success in your studies and future career in healthcare!

: This week, we remember arguably the most renowned thinker to date (in terms of international reputation) to have called Carleton College his alma mater — Thorstein Bunde Veblen, Class of 1880!

Born on this date in 1857 to Norwegian-immigrant parents, Veblen was a scholar of political economy, author, and social critic who became a figure of never-ending relevance to economists, sociologists, and others.

Veblen is perhaps most readily associated with having coined the phrase and concept of “conspicuous consumption” in connection with his critique of the American “leisure class.” Fun fact: the Sayles snack bar was called Conspicuous Consumption for a time last century, named in Veblen's honor!
