The Norwegian department is saddened to learn of the death of His Majesty King Harald V. King Harald had a strong connection to the US, where he lived for some time while Norway was occupied during WWII, and he visited the St. Olaf campus in 1965, 1995, and 2011. On this most recent visit, he joined Professor Kari Lie Dorer's Norwegian class, where this iconic photo of him was taken. The photo captures his warm and welcoming spirit.

In our classes, students often read the famous address he delivered on September 1, 2016, a call to national unity grounded in mutual respect across differences in age, class, immigration status, gender, sexuality, and faith. "It is not always easy to say where we are from," King Harald says in this speech, "which nationality we belong to. What we call home is where our heart is--and that cannot always be placed within the borders of a nation." Today, our hearts are in both Northfield and Norway. Kondolerer.

2025-26 has been a whirlwind of an academic year, we haven't kept up keeping our facebook updated with all the amazing things students have been working on!

Today is the last day of final exams for students and we'd like to share a few student projects. They may be done, but we are grading and slowly shifting gears for our summer research.
